Southern left-hander Ranard Grace was the lone Jaguar named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball team released by the conference Tuesday.
Grace was named to the second team after going 6-2 with 5.72 earned run average as Southern’s Friday night starter. He threw two complete games and struck out 57 batters in 55 2/3 innings.
Alabama State outfielder Ali LaPreaud was named Player of the Year, Arkansas-Pine Bluff catcher Edwin De La Cruz was named Hitter of the Year and Florida A&M right hander Caleb Granger was named Pitcher of the Year.
LaPread batted .328 and led the SWAC with 13 home runs and added 39 runs batted in. De La Cruz led the league with a .428 batting average and was the All-SWAC catcher. Granger finished with a 10-2 record and a 2.97 earned run average for the Rattlers, who on the SWAC East Division with a 22-8 league record.
Florida A&M’s Jamey Shouppe and Texas Southern’s Michael Robertson shared Coach of the Year honors for winning their respective divisions.
Alabama State’s Juan Cruz was named Freshman of the Year for batting .389 with eight home runs and 51 RBI. Bethune-Cookman’s Pablo Torres was the Relief Pitcher of the Year with a 3-2 record and six saves.
