Residents along the Texas Gulf Coast found themselves in the midst of hurricane-force winds and rising flood waters on Monday as Beryl made landfall along the state's coastline.
Beryl, once again a tropical storm on Monday afternoon, brought flooding rains, damaging winds and storm surge to areas from the coastline inwards past Houston after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Matagorda.
The storm, which has made records as the earliest Category 5 storm to form in the Atlantic, popped up as a tropical wave 13 days ago and has since battered the Windward Islands, Jamaica, Grenada, and parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Texans shared photos and videos of the storm's arrival as cities including Galveston and Houston saw significant flooding. More than 2 million people were without power in Houston, according to The Houston Chronicle, and the city's two airports, George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby, were non-operational.
