Student Sport Ireland (SSI) is the representative body for higher education sport on the island of Ireland. We have 30 affiliated HEIs representing over 240,000 full time students and over 800 HEI sports clubs.
SSI is recognised by both Sport Ireland and Sport Northern Ireland and is affiliated to the Federation of Irish Sport, the European University Sports Association (EUSA), and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
Our vision is to lead and influence the potential of student sport in Ireland and our mission is to grow quality student sport competition, enhance wellbeing, and lead the sector.
Registering your team for our competitions is very straight forward. Simply go to the SSI Competitions web page above, select your sport, download and complete the entry form for signing by your Sports Office. Once signed submit via the email address provided.
For the 2023/2024 academic year we’ll be coordinating league and cup competitions across 8 sports with over 130 student teams and 1,800 students participating.

If your competition is not listed it is probably because the details have yet to be finalised or have yet to be logged by the host HEI with SSI. In this event email us at competitions@studentsport.ie and we’ll try and assist you as best we can.
While general queries can be submitted to SSI (via info@studentsport.ie) performance students hoping to compete at a FISU WUC are encouraged to first contact their sport’s NGB Performance Director.
In 2024 FISU (the International University Sports Federation) will organise over 20 WUCs listed here. As FISU’s national university sports federation Student Sport Ireland registers all Irish student athletes for the WUCs. We expect that Irish performance student athletes will compete in 5 or more FISU WUCS in 2024. For the latest information click here (FISU Competitions page).
Contact your Sports Office to ask how you can be nominated to represent your HEI on the SSI Student Commission.
The commission is a network of student sports leaders from across SSI’s 23 affiliated HEI and is an opportunity for the student body (via their student representative) to input and influence SSI and its work. The network also offers the student sports leaders the opportunity to meet and get to know, learn from, and share information with their peers from across the island.
The Commission is chaired by SSI Vice President, the student representative elected annually to SSI Board. The Commission Chair is currently supported in the role by the SSI Aspire Graduate.

Now in its third year the Women’s Student Coaching Academy (WSCA) is a collaborative programme between Student Sport Ireland, Sport Ireland, HEIs and national governing bodies of sport.
The aim of the programme is to build a female student coach support system to enable the student to develop and reach their coaching potential, to increase the number and visibility of female coaches in student sport, and create female role models to inspire and encourage other female students to become a coach.
