Since 2014, the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award program has awarded more than $130 million to fund more than 637 projects that build communities ready to engage in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER).
Supporting communities to conduct engagement projects is central to our mission to help people make informed healthcare decisions and improve healthcare delivery and outcomes by producing and promoting high-integrity, evidence-based information that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community.
The Engagement Award April 2022 Cycle funding announcements, which will begin accepting Letters of Intent on January 19, continue to reflect the Engagement Award program’s support of projects that encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders as integral members of the PCOR/CER enterprise. These awards are for research support projects. This program does not fund research studies.

Engagement Awards: Capacity Building
This funding opportunity will continue to support projects that help communities increase their facility with and ability to participate across all phases of the PCOR/CER process. Projects can be for up to two years in duration and up to $250,000.
Special areas of interest for this funding opportunity include a) intellectual and developmental disabilities and b) maternal morbidity and mortality. PCORI reminds prospective applicants that special areas of interest exist to encourage submissions on a topic, not to limit submissions to that topic only. PCORI continues to welcome and accept Engagement Award Letters of Intent on all topics related to PCOR/CER that fall within the guidelines of the program.

Engagement Awards: Dissemination Initiative
This funding opportunity aims to support projects that help organizations and communities plan for or actively bring pertinent PCORI-funded research findings to relevant stakeholders in ways that will command their attention and interest, encouraging use of this information in their healthcare decision making. Applicants for an Engagement Award: Dissemination Initiative will be required to focus their project on one of two tracks:
- Building Capacity for Dissemination projects to lay the groundwork for disseminating and implementing PCORI-funded research findings through organizations with strong ties to patients, clinicians, communities, and others who can use this information to inform healthcare decisions. This funding track differs from the Engagement Award: Capacity Building funding opportunity in that it supports projects that focus exclusively on building capacity for the dissemination of PCOR/CER results.
- Active Dissemination projects aimed at spreading awareness and increasing knowledge of PCORI-funded research findings, targeted directly to end-user audiences, such as patients, clinicians, communities, and others who can use this information to inform healthcare decisions. Projects will be designed by organizations and communities with established relationships with relevant stakeholders to actively disseminate the findings from PCORI-funded studies—on their own or as part of the body of existing evidence relevant to the PCORI-funded research findings.

Engagement Awards: Stakeholder Convening Support
This funding opportunity aims to support projects that include multi-stakeholder convenings, meetings, and conferences that align with PCORI’s mission and facilitate expansion of PCOR/CER through collaboration around such efforts. Projects can be up to one year in duration and up to $100,000.
This announcement expresses three special area of interest, including a) intellectual and developmental disabilities, b) maternal morbidity and mortality, and c) consideration of the full range of outcomes data. Note that applicants to the outcomes data special area of interest are strongly encouraged to consider requesting a program fit call while developing the Letter of Intent.
