Woman, 83, sexually assaulted on her way to church

ENGLEWOOD - Police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted an 83-year-woman who was on her way to church for a sunrise service Monday.

The woman was walking through a parking lot at the Korean Community Church of New Jersey about 5:30 a.m. when she was grabbed, according to Englewood Police Capt. Timothy Torrell.

The man pushed the woman to the ground and sexually assaulted her, Torrell said.

Police released surveillance videos Friday of the attack and the aftermath in an attempt to identify the man.

As she is being assaulted, the woman waves to a passing car, which slows down. At that point, the suspect gets up and calmly walks away.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, about 30 years old, 5-feet, 6-inches tall, and was last seen wearing a drawstring-type backpack, with light colored pants and dark shoes with light-colored soles, according to police.

"As this appears to be a random attack at this point, we are urging residents in the area to be aware of their surroundings when walking during late night and early morning hours," Torrell said.

Both uniformed and plainclothes patrols have been stepped up in the area as well, he added.
