Awe as Woman Shows How 'Ponytail Placement' Changes Her Face Shape

The internet has been left mesmerized by a TikTok demonstrating the huge changes that can be made to your facial shape simply by altering the position of your ponytail.

Pulling in more than 1 million viewers since it was shared last month, Tina Prokas' viral video saw her pull her hair back into a low, middle and high ponytail, with the hairstyle seeming to change her face shape dependent on the placement of the style.

In the caption of the video, shared to her account @tinaprokas, she said that the video is "proof that your ponytail placement will change your face shape," with the amount of views and over 33,000 likes proving viewers felt the same about her hair theory.

Each of the positions seemed to alter Prokas' facial features. The low ponytail gave her a softer look, whereas the high ponytail left her looking sharp and sculpted. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the middle placement sat somewhere between the two.

Revealing her top choice of the three, she wrote, "My favorite will always be a high ponytail!" in the caption, as she explained, "My face feels the most snatched when I wear it high."

Prokas isn't the only one to have picked up on this, as one user shared, "when I wear a mid I have a more lifted face shape but when I wear a low it's more rounded. People have told me this lots lol."

To find out more about how to tell which ponytail placement is best for you, Newsweek spoke to the king of the slick-back pony, Andrew Fitzsimons. The hair expert, who has even worked with Bellami, has been responsible for creating snatched looks for the likes of Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey over the course of his career.

Fitzsimons explained, "The height of a ponytail can change the appearance of the face by drawing attention to different features depending on its position. A high ponytail provides a lifting effect that can emphasize cheekbones, whereas a low ponytail elongates the face, softening features and creating a more sophisticated look."

When it comes to which height is best for your face shape, Fitzsimons offered some advice: "Any face shape can look great with any style, but if you want to enhance your natural features, there are a few tips you can use to accentuate those. A high ponytail is ideal for oval or round faces as it can create the illusion of drawing the eyes upward and aligning hair with the cheekbones. Adding a ponytail extension can further enhance the hair's fullness, which can help balance roundness.

"A mid ponytail is ideal for square and heart-shaped faces, balancing the proportions and highlighting natural features. A low ponytail is best for long and oval faces, as it compliments the face's natural contour."

Whilst each look is a ponytail, the different heights need different styling to ensure the best results. Fitzsimons explained, "For a high pony, I suggest using a strong-hold gel or mousse and a fine tooth comb to smooth back hair from the hairline to the crown, and finish with a light mist of hairspray to keep fly aways down.

"For a mid ponytail, I recommend applying a smoothing serum to damp hair and blow drying with a paddle brush to prep for the extensions. For a low ponytail, I like to part the hair in the middle and then gather at the nape of the neck using a pomade to smooth down stray hairs."
