Broadway's Biggest Night: Who Will Take Home a Tony?
The 77th annual Tony Awards are this Sunday on CBS, which means the best of Broadway (and some of Hollywood) are going to make their way to the Great White Way to celebrate the theatre. ("Theatre" with an intentional "re" and said like Judi Dench in a Shakespeare play.) Despite Broadway very much still recovering from the pandemic, this year featured not just great talent, but also some great productions. Let's break down why this year's Tony Awards are the one to watch.
For me, the Tonys used to be the only way I could see a Broadway show or learn anything about Broadway. I would watch the show from my childhood home and dream of being able to make it to New York City to see a musical or a play. Which is why watching the Tonys is so nostalgic for me. Even though I haven't seen most of the shows, it's still amazing to watch. And this year Ariana DeBose is back as host, which means it's going to be quite a show. (I could watch her dance for hours.)
Even though many of the nominees aren't household names, there are quite a few you'll recognize. Stars like Sarah Paulson, Daniel Radcliffe, Jeremy Strong, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Lange, Rachel McAdams, and Eddie Redmayne are all nominated. Who will win? Let's break it down.
- For the top prizes, Stereophonic is the favorite to win Best Play. The Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen is expected to win Best Musical. For the revivals, I think Purlie Victorious could win Best Play Revival, and Merrily We Roll Along will almost certainly win for Best Musical Revival.
- In the play acting categories, I think Jeremy Strong has a lock on Best Actor for An Enemy of the People. For Best Actress, it's a race between Sarah Paulson for Appropriate and Jessica Lange for Mother Play. My money is on Paulson to win. In the Featured categories (what the Tonys call supporting performances), Corey Stall will win the Featured Actor Tony for Appropriate and Kara Young needs to win Featured Actress for Purlie Victorious.
- In the musical acting categories, for Best Actor it's Jonathan Groff for Merrily We Roll Along. For Best Actress, I feel like the love for Hell's Kitchen is so strong that Maleah Joi Moon is going to win. In the featured categories, Daniel Radcliffe is taking Featured Actor for Merrily We Roll Along and Lindsay Mendez is taking Featured Actress for Merrily We Roll Along.

We spoke about her making history as the first Black performer to receive three consecutive Tony nominations and only the sixth performer in Tony history to do so.
