UFC releases statement on racial remark made by fighter Alex Nicholson

The UFC has addressed the racially charged comment made by fighter Alex Nicholson earlier this month.

At UFC 202, Nicholson, working the corner of teammate Mike Perry, uttered a racial remark regarding Perry's opponent Hyun Gyu Lim.

"He can't even open his motherf---ing eyes, boy," Nicholson told Perry before the fight, a quote that was captured by the UFC's corner audio microphones.

In the statement, the UFC wrote that Nicholson would face discipline if anything like this happened again in the future.

UFC competitor Alex Nicholson made a derogatory comment toward another UFC athlete while cornering his teammate, Mike Perry, at UFC 202. UFC has addressed the matter with Nicholson, as well as Perry, to express the organization's disappointment with Nicholson's insensitive remark. As such, the organization informed Nicholson that any future instances of this nature could result in a suspension from competition, or termination of his contract.

UFC requires all athletes to act in an ethical, responsible and respectful manner, as mandated by the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. UFC holds its athletes to the highest standard and will continue to take appropriate action if and when it is warranted.

Nicholson released a statement of his own on Twitter a few days after UFC 202, saying he was "hyped" for Perry's fight and it's "all love no hate."

On the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani two days after the fight, Perry downplayed Nicholson's words.

"What did he say? People may have taken it wrong," said Perry, who won the fight with Lim by first-round knockout. "I think people's opinion on this has been blown way out of proportion and they need to calm down."
