Police say the body of a person who went missing after swimming in the Hudson River in Dobbs Ferry Monday evening was recovered Tuesday morning.

Dobbs Ferry police said the body of the victim was recovered around 11 a.m. after an extensive search that started at 6 p.m. Monday following reports of a person who disappeared from Waterfront Park after swimming in the river.

Officials believe the person may have been assisting crews to dismantle rides at a recent Fourth of July carnival at the park and went into the water to cool off. Information about the victim's identity will be withheld until the family is notified, officials said.

"We had reports from some people on scene saying that he just went in for a swim and he was calling out for help a few minutes after," said Joe Giuliano, Assistant Fire Chief for the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Fire Department.

Several agencies responded to assist in the search, including the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Fire Department, New York State Police, Westchester County Police, Piermont Fire Department and the New Rochelle Police Department.

Giuliano said search efforts temporarily ended after 9:30 p.m. and resumed Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. as an effort to recover a body rather than a search for a living individual.

Dobbs Ferry police say the investigation has been turned over to the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office.
