About the Cover
Defects in the cytoskeleton, a collection of protein-based filaments, are associated with functional defects in neurons. Such defects are known or thought to occur in several neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. In this image of axons from cultured Xenopus laevis retinal ganglion cells, two key components of the cytoskeleton are shown: actin (green) and tubulin (yellow). Francesca van Tartwijk et al. used these cells to investigate how mutation of the ALS/FTD-associated RNA-binding protein fused in sarcoma affects developing axons. See the article by Tartwijk et al. for more information. Cover image: Francesca van Tartwijk and Lucia Wunderlich.
