Simple E-Reader, Tablet or Phone Stand

I want to read when I'm sitting at the table. My e-reader cover doesn't have a feature to work as a stand so I decided to build a super simple single position e-reader stand.

You can find many designs of adjustable stands but I wanted my stand to be as simple as possible. I've considered many different angles. What works for me is a regular 45 degree angle which is OK also for other places where I want to use it.

Materials:

• Scrap wood, approx. 200mm x 100mm. I've used 10mm thick plywood
• 4 screws for wood. Size must fit to thickness of your wood - in my case it is ⌀ ~3.5mm. As an alternative, you can use glue for wood instead of screws
• Paint for wood (optional)

Tools:

• Saw (I've used a circular saw)
• Drill for your screws ~3mm
• Screwdriver
• Wood clamp
• File
• Sandpaper
• Ruler
• Pencil

To build a stand we need to cut out 3 pieces:

• 2x 90mm x 100mm
• 1x 20mm x 100mm

This can be done with a single piece of scrap wood with dimensions of 200mm x 100mm.

Note: You need a little bit longer piece of wood - around 204mm x 100mm - because of the kerf. We need at least 2 cuts which removes approximately 2x4mm of wood.

We need to drill 2 holes in front of the stand to attach small 20mm piece with the bottom piece. I've used 3mm drill with countersink for a better screw placement.

Note: instead of screws, it is possible to use a wood glue.

Now we need to assemble bottom and back pieces together. Step is very similar to assembling bottom and front pieces.

Use wood clamps to stabilize pieces when drilling (or gluing).

At this point our stand is functioning and works as expected.

I wanted to shape front and back pieces in a way that points where an e-reader/tablet touches the stand are as flat as possible.

I've used a file for wood. It took me some time to shape the touching surfaces, but now a laying e-reader/tablet fits nicely.

As a final shaping process, I've used a file and a sandpaper to smooth all the edges and surfaces so there are no splinters coming out and the surfaces are nicely flat.

I've used a transparent paint for wood. I've added 3 layers of paint - yes, it has to dry 3 times, but it feels really nice when I touch it.

I've glued a felt pieces on the bottom so I don't scratch the surface of a table when I use it.

The stand is finished and works as expected.

Here is a small variation:

• 21cm wide,
• built without screws (glue only)
• 12mm plywood used instead of 10mm.

The purpose was to have a place for a cup of some drink but it works perfectly with a reader+phone or a big tablet.
