J.J. Abrams holds the rare feat of having helmed two or more movies in two of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time. Abrams first helmed the reboot of the Star Trek films. He later went on to direct two installments in the sequel trilogy of Star Wars movies. However, Abrams’ Star Wars foray almost did not happen.

J.J. Abrams is most popularly known for directing two modern Star Wars films, which are Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Before doing these tentpole studio films, he made his impressive debut with Mission Impossible III, bringing back the franchise on the right track after the underwhelming second installment.

The director also kicked off the modern era of Star Trek with the 2009 reboot which was received very well. Abrams then made arguably his best film with 2011’s Super 8, which was a throwback to Steven Spielberg’s sci-films. When the idea of the film came to him, he knew he had to call Spielberg to help him make it.

Trekkies might never get their R-rated Star Trek film with Quentin Tarantino directing. The fourth film in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline of reboot films has been developing since 2016 after the release of Star Trek: Beyond. However, the film has undergone various iterations and missed several deadlines.
Jonathan Frakes, who plays William Riker in the franchise and has directed multiple episodes of original films has reportedly lost all hope on a fourth film. The Star Trek: The Next Generation star reportedly mentioned that if a movie with such big names attached could not get developed, the future of the franchise lay in TV.

Apple renews Presumed Innocent for Season 2 after the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller climbs the charts
Apple TV+ is so thrilled with the performance of its new legal drama Presumed Innocent that it is renewing the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller for another season. Some creative forces behind the first season, David E. Kelly, J.J. Abrams, and Gyllenhaal, return as executive producers for Presumed Innocent Season 2, with author Scott Turow co-executive producing. Wait. Isn’t Presumed Innocent a one-and-done story? Not when money is waiting in the wings, my friends!
Presumed Innocent debuted on Apple TV+ one month ago and has been tearing up the charts since then. It’s the most-viewed drama ever on Apple TV+, with the final two episodes arriving on July 17 and July 24. While the story of Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich and Ruth Negga’s Barbara Sabitch is concluded, Presumed Innocent Season 2 will revolve “around a suspenseful, brand new case.” Apple won’t reveal casting for some time, though it’s possible characters...

The late Bill Paxton was a new dad when he set out for Oklahoma to chase tornadoes for the natural disaster thriller “Twister” in 1995. His son, James, was just over a year old and Bill’s wife Louise brought the baby out for a visit.
“I was a little too young to be forming lasting, cognitive memories, but there’s some cool photos,” James Paxton, now 30, tells Variety, smiling as he describes a shot of the toddler version of himself posing with his dad in Bill’s (his father’s character in the movie shared the same name) iconic red Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. “Unfortunately, I don’t remember that, but I’m glad that we have the photo to say, ‘Hey, I was there.’”

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams achieved peak Geekdom when he directed both the Star Trek reboot and the Star Wars sequels. The filmmaker was known for his shows Lost and Fringe, as well as for helming the action film Mission Impossible III. The director has also dabbled in multiple other franchises, including writing a Superman script in the early 2000s.
Abrams has confessed that he was a geek in his childhood and that while other kids would indulge in sports, he would film explosions and examine how electronic parts worked. He mentioned that he had sent a letter to makeup and prosthetics legend Dick Smith, who sent him back a prop tongue from The Exorcist.

And while Alien: Romulus is currently in focus due to a trailer coming out, its rival, the Predator franchise, is also alive and well, and we actually have some information for you about the future of that franchise as well. The most recent installment, Prey, was released on August 5, 2022, to positive reviews, and Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the movie, is currently working on another standalone movie that is scheduled to come out sometime in 2025. Badlands, as the movie is titled, will continue the franchise in a proper way, and it seems that Trachtenberg has someone in mind for the main role in the movie.
Badlands is supposedly one of many planned Predator projects, and it is supposed to serve as a standalone sequel to Prey. Trachtenberg is, for the first time in the franchise’s history, eyeing a female lead, which could change the franchise forever in a very positive way!

As 20th Century Studios and director Dan Trachtenberg move forward with their plans to expand the Predator franchise following the success of the most recent instalment, Prey, the next project to feature the iconic extraterrestrial big game hunter has now been announced.
Deadline reports that Trachtenberg is set to helm a standalone Predator movie titled Badlands, with Elle Fanning on board to play the lead role. Plot details are still under wraps, but the story is believed to be set "sometime in the future."
Trachtenberg is said to have wanted to land an "established star" for this movie, and began taking meetings with talent. Insiders close to the project say, "Fanning is a fan of the franchise and once execs got wind of her interest, moved to set a meeting with her and Trachtenberg."
As for Prey, a direct sequel to the 2022 film is also happening, though details are still few and far between.

It's "Alien" vs. "Predator" all over again. As the next installment of the classic horror franchise is set to arrive later this year with "Alien: Romulus," the rival "Predator" series is gearing up for a revival of its own. Director Dan Trachtenberg's "Prey" injected fresh blood into the IP in 2022, stripping away all the flashy bells and whistles from Shane Black's messy sequel and instead taking things back in time to colonial America. In fact, the Hulu film earned such glowing praise that it led to a buzzy announcement earlier this year, when we heard the promising news that 20th Century Studios would be bringing Trachtenberg back for more movies to come. At the time, all that was revealed was the title of the next planned feature -- "Badlands" -- but now we know which actor has been handpicked to lead Trachtenberg's new film.

Elle Fanning is going from great to bad. The actor known for The Great is in talks to star in Badlands, a new movie set in The Predator universe, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Badlands is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the filmmaker who revamped the franchise with the 20th Century and Hulu feature Prey, which was set in 1719 and starred breakout Amber Midthunder as a young Comanche woman pitted against an alien hunter. The film was a critical success and broke viewing records for Hulu.
Trachtenberg reteamed with Prey scribe Patrick Aison for the Badlands story, with Aison penning the script. THR reported in February that in addition to Badlands, 20th Century has a number of Predator projects in development, with Trachtenberg at the center of a growing universe. 20th Century had no comment.

Elle Fanning could be trading her bustle for survival gear after being in talks to join the cast of Dan Trachtenberg’s standalone Predator film Badlands. Deadline says Fanning is negotiating for the role in the highly anticipated film, which Trachtenberg is directing and co-writing with Patrick Aison.
Anticipation for Trachtenberg’s Prey follow-up is through the roof. Prey was a surprise smash hit of 2022, with Trachtenberg and star Amber Midthunder arguably delivering the best Predator movie since the 1987 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Plot details for Badlands remain a mystery, as do the film’s release plans. Prey premiered exclusively on Hulu to record numbers during the pandemic. However, 20th Century Studios is going hard in the paint with its extraterrestrial action flicks and the upcoming Alien: Romulus coming to theaters. It would not be surprising to see Badlands debuting on the silver screen alongside the Xenomorph threat.

Apple TV+ has now released the new tense trailer for Presumed Innocent, the limited series coming to the streaming service courtesy of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. The legal drama has Jake Gyllenhaal in for the fight of his life as he defends himself from allegations of murdering a peer with whom he shared a complicated entanglement. It doesn’t look good for Gyllenhaal’s character, as a plethora of evidence is working against him, and he can only continually profess his innocence.
The official synopsis reads,
“Gyllenhaal is set to star as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose world is upended when a close colleague is murdered — and the evidence begins to point to Rusty himself. The role would be his first ongoing part in a TV series. Presumed Innocent was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Sabich, along with Bonnie Bedelia and Raul Julia.

Known as the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock left a legacy that the filmmakers still use while writing tense scripts and making horror and thriller movies. His most influential works are Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds and, of course, Rear Window.
70 years ago, the latter mystery thriller, which follows a story of a wheelchair-bound photographer who was spying on his neighbors, became a ground-breaking sensation. Since then, it has inspired a number of movies, and these include the film that is now holding the second place in Netflix’s global chart, even though it was released in 2007.
Its plot revolves around Kale, a 17-year-old sullen boy who ended up under house arrest after assaulting his teacher. There he turns his attention to spying on the neighborhood out of boredom, however, this childish game soon takes quite an unexpected turn.

You can’t always get what you want, unless you are a Rolling Stones fan hungering for documentary deep-dives into the band’s storied history. Indeed, it is spectacularly serendipitous that Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg arrives just a few months after The Stones and Brian Jones. The latter doc, from Nick Broomfield, centered on Jones, the band’s founder and leader until Mick Jagger and Keith Richards snatched that mantle. Catching Fire and The Stones and Brian Jones cover much of the same ground, use some of the same archival footage, and even feature the same anecdotes from delightful Tin Drum director Volker Schlöndorff. The films are even released by the same distributor, Magnolia.
Catching Fire and Brian Jones should, of course, be judged on their own merits, yet it’s impossible not to consider them in-tandem. The perspectives are obviously quite different, as are––to some degree––heroes and villains.

He joins up with a Brockhampton-esque group of rap-crooners as they head for a gig in El Paso. It’s a long journey, especially for seven people packed into the same van, but they pass the time easily by tooling around with new lyrics, telling stories, and just goofing off.
The sheer number of bodies crammed in the van means that we don’t get to know these Gen-Zers too well. Seven (Aaron Melloul) is a broody troublemaker and Mao (Alexander Brackney) is a wild-haired, good-natured big fella with a sweet set of pipes. Froggy (Micro Tdh) is a versatile Latino rap-singer who slips seamlessly between styles and languages,...

Order in the court! The Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, will arrive on the streaming platform earlier than anticipated. Previously scheduled for its premiere on June 14, the courtroom thriller comes to Apple TV+ on June 12. Inspired by the Alan J. Pakula-directed thriller of the same name, the original film starred Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, and Greta Scacchi. The newest version of Presumed Innocent hails from David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, with Gyllenhaal and Negga commanding the drama.
Presumed Innocent revolves around a vicious murder that sends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office reeling when one of their representatives becomes a suspect in the crime. Kelley’s version is said to investigate themes of obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love as the accused fights to keep aspects of their life from falling apart.

There’s nothing like a niche subject or place to provide the backdrop for a quirky documentary - and Panellinion has both. The film takes its title from the name of a small cafe in Athens - the type of place which is full of clutter that seems to have grown organically rather than been put there and which is dedicated to chess players.
Shot largely in black and white by Kostas Antarachas and Spyros Mantzavinos over a number of years but also including Super 8 footage, they take an observational and relaxed approach that allows stories and moments of drama to emerge without feeling forced although the film feels a bit ambling in places as a result.
There’s no such problems within the games we witness, which are conducted with precision and intensity against a clock and, occasionally it seems, even without a board. It’s fair to say chess is.

David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is at the helm of a mysterious new genre movie for Bad Robot and Warner Bros., starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway. Per Variety, Sundance breakout star Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) has nabbed the third lead role.
Maisy Stella joins previously announced cast members Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep) and Anne Hathaway (Colossal).

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

When the film biz jetset lands at O.R Tambo airport for this week’s 6th Joburg Film Festival they’d be amazed by a little-known story of how the airport’s namesake was the mastermind behind a plan to recruit ordinary British working-class volunteers to travel to South Africa and detonate pamphlet bombs in the 1970s during the height of Apartheid.
The fascinating story has been made into a thrilling documentary by director Gordon Main, “London Recruits,” featuring interviews with those who went, interspersed with Super 8 archive footage and dramatic reenactments. It is the festival opener.
Based on the 2012 book, the U.K.’s Barefoot Rascals teamed up with producer Robyn Slovo, daughter of Joe Slovo, who was a major figure in South Africa’s anti-Apartheid struggle, as well as Jacintha de Nobrega’s Arclight Productions in South Africa.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The Crown” Season 6, streaming on Netflix now.
The series finale of “The Crown” is set in 2005, a full 17 years before Queen Elizabeth II’s death. But as the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, told Variety earlier this year, he felt compelled to honor the Queen’s real-life passing within the show.
“We’d all been through the experience of the funeral,” he said. “So because of how deeply everybody will have felt that, I had to try and find a way in which the final episode dealt with the character’s death, even though she hadn’t died yet.”
The result is an emotional final five minutes, which sees an 80-year-old Elizabeth, played by Imelda Staunton, contemplating her life in St George’s Chapel, where she will eventually be laid to rest. She imagines younger versions of herself — resulting in cameos from the role’s previous incumbents,...

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour may not technically be magic, but you might be forgiven for wondering if it could be. As captured in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — which the star also wrote, directed and produced — the stage concert is never short on jaw-dropping delights: acrobatic choreography and soaring vocals, designer outfits upon designer outfits, sets that seem to dwarf the very arenas they’re in. Above all, there’s the sheer pulsing ecstasy of a crowd who feed off their queen’s energy and reflect it back to her a thousandfold.
But if magic can be exhilarating, getting to see how the trick is done can be an even deeper pleasure. Were Renaissance the movie simply a recording of the show, it’d be a treat in itself. By weaving in behind-the-scenes footage and interviews that reveal where Renaissance came from and how it got to be here,...

About a decade ago, Netflix was sitting pretty, pulling in growing numbers of viewers with TV shows they had licensed from other networks. Some might remember how, in 2013, NBCUniversal licensed the streaming rights for "The Office" to Netflix, allowing it to become a frequently re-watched series for the streaming service. 2013 was when, some might say, early rumblings of what was to become the Streaming Wars began. Companies began keeping their own properties under their own umbrellas, each hoping that it could launch a successful streaming service of its own. Netflix also began making original content, a move that was considered risible at the time.
We all know the hoarding, overspending, and striking that the Streaming Wars ultimately begat, but just prior to the War, streaming seemed like a sustainable model. Studios would license their movies to a third-party streamer, they would earn revenue, and many older shows and movies were advertised as being more available.

French-based sales agency Lightdox has acquired the international rights to feature documentary “The Mechanics of Things” by Italian director Alessandra Celesia, ahead of its international premiere Saturday at the Torino Film Festival. The film had its world premiere at Les Etats généraux du Film Documentaire in Lussas this August. The exclusive trailer is shown below.
The film’s starting point is a terrible accident: Tito, a stray cat adopted by Celesia, falls from the eighth floor, and is paralyzed. The filmmaker herself is struggling with invisible scars. Together, they embark on a journey to China, searching for regeneration, both mental and physical.
After her cat was paralyzed, Celesia set out to find a way to heal him. Meeting a French association of paralyzed people working on spinal cord regeneration, she embarked on a journey to China for a clinical trial. The scientific discovery and medical trial patented by the association...

Depeche Mode are releasing Strange/Strange Too, a collection of music videos directed by Anton Corbijn, on DVD and Blu-ray for the very first time on December 8th via Sony Music Entertainment.

Both were originally directed and filmed in Super 8 by Corbijn and have now been restored from original sources for the DVD and Blu-ray release. Corbijn himself was involved in the tape restoration process, which took place over several years with the participation of other folks involved with the original films as well.
Filmed mostly in black and white, Strange features videos for the three main singles for Music for the Masses and “A Question of Time” from Black Celebration alongside “Pimpf,” the instrumental closing track from the former album. In contrast, Strange Too was shot in full color. It includes...

If the above image doesn’t make it abundantly clear, director Scott Derrickson brings a rather bloody, violent segment to V/H/S/85 with “Dreamkill.”
Derrickson, who needs no introduction, recently directed the horror blockbuster The Black Phone for Blumhouse and previously helmed horror favorites like The Exorcism of Emily Rose. With “Dreamkill,” Derrickson and writing partner C. Robert Cargill evoke the gritty horror of their nightmarish feature Sinister. It fits right at home with the grainy textured horrors packaged in V/H/S/85, one of the most cohesive installments of the popular anthology franchise yet.
That’s not a surprise to the director, who spoke with Bloody Disgusting about V/H/S/85 after the film’s Fantastic Fest debut.
“I think it’s inevitable that the film as a whole would come out looking the way that it does because you’re talking about VHS materials at the very early stages of its consumer usage,...

Nothing brings out intimacy visually better than a roll of Super 8 footage. The main strength of Giselle Lin's personal project “I Look into the Mirror and Repeat Myself” stems from that assumption. The film, in its essayistic, fragmentated form, tackles the issue of sibling connection and shared experience of growing up alienated from one's parents.
I Look into the Mirror and Repeat Myself is screened in Locarno Film Festival
The characters (Lin and her actual sisters) discuss the memories of dealing with a demanding mother and an emotionally detached and psychologically abusive father. Five perspectives shed light on the dynamic between the siblings, the shared trauma, but also the individual experiences which vary due to favoritism in the family. “I Look…” is separated into segments, in which each of the sisters is given a platform to talk about her childhood memories. Sometimes in the form of a dialogue,...
