Lies we Tell
Based somewhat on the classic nineteenth century novel Uncle Silas, it tells the story of Maud (Agnes O'Casey) who, when her father dies inherits a lot of money and the vast family estate of Knowl. However her uncle (David Wilmot), accompanied by his son, daughter and a strange French governess come to stay after he is appointed as her guardian. It soon becomes clear that uncle's eye is on the prize and despite Maud's sharp tongue, wit and strength of will she is unprepared for the lengths he will go to to take control of all she has.
I was surprised how powerful and shocking this film would be and indeed, in places quite hard to watch. Whilst it is not exactly an unheard of piece of history, the power a man / guardian would have over a young ward and what he can 'rightfully' get away with is extraordinary and allows for something not far off a horror / thriller that becomes unbearably tense. This is helped along by fabulous turns from O'Casey, centre stage throughout and Wilmot who you just want to throttle as soon as you see him. The ending is all rather neat and tidy and seems a little rushed, but this is a minor quibble in a neatly tense piece of work.
