The feature film debut of writer/director Chris Stuckmann has a solid, albeit slightly familiar, premise. In 2008, four YouTubers known for a ghost hunting show called ‘Paranormal Paranoids’ go missing near the deserted town of Shelby Oaks, sparking conspiracy theories and suspicions it’s a hoax to increase the channel’s notoriety.
When the bodies of Laura (Caisey Cole), Peter (Anthony Baldasare), and David (Eric Francis Malaragni) are discovered, however, the focus shifts to the fourth member: host Riley (Sarah Durn), whose disappearance prompts nationwide speculation around the question: “Who took Riley Brennan?”
That’s the question that Riley’s older sister Mia (Camille Sullivan) can’t stop thinking about. Twelve long years after the disappearance of her supernaturally gifted sibling, Mia is being interviewed by a documentary team led by Janet (Emily Bennett). It’s something of a hail mary by Mia’s husband Robert (Brendan Sexton III), who...

Paramount announced a reboot of the famous Scary Movie franchise and Anna Faris may become a part of it if her two conditions are fulfilled. One, of course, is good money and the second is the participation of her co-star Regina Hall. Faris and Hall portrayed Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks in the first four films in the franchise.

Faris revealed in a recent interview that she loved working with Hall and would love to reprise the role if Brenda Meeks would also return. Fans are rooting for the pair as well since it was these two recurring actresses who played a huge part in these films becoming a near-$900 million success.

Does anyone remember the Satanic panic? It was a bizarre mix of urban legend, conspiracy theory, media frenzy, and religious fanaticism that occurred primarily in the early 1980s. The phenomenon was marked by thousands of alleged incidents of ritualized abuse, often involving children, and desecrations reportedly perpetrated across the nation by scores of so-called Satanic cults in towns and cities everywhere. While many of the reports were later found to be baseless—and the initial investigative techniques used to supposedly substantiate them discredited—the aftermath of the panic remains with us today in the shape of things such as QAnon and PizzaGate.
The roots of the Satanic panic were found in the late 1960s and ‘70s, thanks to books like The Satan Seller, social changes like the rise of the counterculture in the national zeitgeist, infamous events like the Manson Family murders, the introduction of new religions into American society,...

This post contains mild spoilers for "Longlegs."
After a lengthy, impressive marketing campaign that maintained pretty much all of the mystery (which is tough to do these days), director Oz Perkins' "Longlegs" hit theaters recently. Based on the early response from critics and the huge turnout at the box office, it seems the much-hyped horror flick was worth the wait. Not just for a totally transformative performance by Nicolas Cage as the killer either, as the whole cast delivers their A-game. Specifically, Alicia Witt, of "Orange is the New Black" fame, gives a performance in the film that's been labeled as a masterclass.
Witt recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her unexpected turn as Ruth in the film. Ruth is the mother of Maika Monroe's Lee, the FBI agent tasked with tracking down a mysterious serial killer, played by Cage. Ruth ends up becoming one heck of a...

“The Exorcism” is a movie directed by Joshua John Miller starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Simpkins and Sam Worthington.
Russell Crowe returns to our screens for the second time this year in a film all about exorcism. In “The Exorcism”, we are taken into the fictitious production of an Exorcist (1973) remake. Crowe portrays a downtrodden actor tasked with playing the exorcist, a role he struggles with due to personal problems.
The script cleverly plays with the concept of a film within a film, an idea that is neatly wrapped up within a horror film. Regrettably, it’s not Russell Crowe that is at fault here, but the film itself, which fails to build a coherent and enticing narrative. It seems to be caught in a grey area between being a jump-scare horror flick and a well-rounded character drama.

A lot of horror movies nowadays try to build up hype with critics claiming that they’re “one the scariest movies ever” or “the scariest movie since The Exorcist.” And while that buzz is similarly surrounding Longlegs, the marketing for the film alone is certainly making an impression that sets it apart from the others. In the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he explains that the film lives up to a lot of the claims, “Once the credits rolled, I found myself surprisingly shaken up by what I’d just seen, and it’s a film I’ll need to chew on in the coming weeks. Expect this one to make major waves among horror fans when it opens on July 12th. Will it be considered a new classic? Time will tell, but for me, this was a pretty dazzling piece of work.”

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
Making a horror film in 2024 about the nature of capital-e Evil is a lofty, impressive endeavor, especially given how many past classics of the genre set the bar so high. Horror movies are never in short supply, and the majority of them are (in one way or another) chasing the same classic high benchmarks, which means that a filmmaker has to find their own unique voice in attempting to play in the same sandbox as, say, "The Exorcist," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Se7en," and others.
Writer/director Osgood Perkins has been steadily developing just the right kind of unique voice within the genre ever since his debut film, "The Blackcoat's Daughter," and now his latest feature, "Longlegs," is his first masterpiece to date, combining a slew of his most effective tropes as an auteur with the perfect choice of material and collaborators. A few months ago, Paramount and Miramax announced that they are reviving the Scary Movie horror parody series to bring a Scary Movie 6 to theatres sometime in 2025 – and that announcement has inspired us to go back and revisit the earlier entries in the franchise. Last month, we covered the original Scary Movie, and now time for Scary Movie 2 (watch it Here) to get the Revisited treatment. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by the team of Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Alyson Fouse, Greg Grabianski, Dave Polsky, Michael Anthony Snowden, and Craig Wayans, Scary Movie 2 has the following synopsis: As the supernatural extension of the first film, Scary Movie 2 casts its satirical eye on such iconic classics as The Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill, and Poltergeist, as well as the more recent films Hannibal and What Lies Beneath.

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.

It hasn't been a blockbuster year for horror at the box office in 2024, but A24 and director Ti West just delivered a solid little debut with "MaXXXine." Building off of the success of "X" and "Pearl" in 2022, West's trilogy centered on Mia Goth's Maxine Minx has come to a close on a high note: The latest entry opened higher than either of the previous films by a pretty significant margin. While that's still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, a win is a win.
"MaXXXine" opened to $6.7 million domestically over the weekend, landing at number four on the charts, with "Inside Out 2" ($30.3 million) and "Despicable Me 4" ($75 million) owning the lion's share of the attention from moviegoers. But horror fans still turned out to see what West and Goth had cooked up, with the film pulling in another $1.1 million overseas for a $7.8 million global debut.

Magical realism, fantasy, science fiction, gothic, horror, multimillion-dollar blockbusters – Guillermo del Toro has excelled in all of them. The monsters created by the master of dark fairy tales are unforgettable – be it the Kaiju from Pacific Rim or the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth.
But del Toro doesn't just try to scare. Monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures in his films are metaphors for the human experience, and each story has a profound humanist message.
And one of such films is Cronos – del Toro's debut shot in Mexico. The director went into debt for it, even mortgaging his house. Special effects were handled by Necropia, a studio he founded from scratch.
Del Toro spent ten long years developing this brainchild, after studying makeup with the great Dick Smith, who was responsible for the makeup on The Exorcist. The horror film did not become a box office sensation, but it did...

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams achieved peak Geekdom when he directed both the Star Trek reboot and the Star Wars sequels. The filmmaker was known for his shows Lost and Fringe, as well as for helming the action film Mission Impossible III. The director has also dabbled in multiple other franchises, including writing a Superman script in the early 2000s.
Abrams has confessed that he was a geek in his childhood and that while other kids would indulge in sports, he would film explosions and examine how electronic parts worked. He mentioned that he had sent a letter to makeup and prosthetics legend Dick Smith, who sent him back a prop tongue from The Exorcist.

10 Possession-Based Horror Films to watch if you liked Russell Crowe’s The Exorcism ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
In Exorcism, Anthony’s daughter, Lee Miller (Ryan Simpkins), suspects that her father has either gotten back to his past addictions or there’s some sinister cause behind his erratic behavior. Anthony, who was roped in for a film on exorcism, gets flashbacks of the time when he was molested.
As the movie progresses, strange things start to happen on Anthony’s film sets, with him even banging his head on a table and contorting his body. This makes Lee consult a Catholic priest. Things take a more disastrous turn when Father Conor tries to perform an exorcism on the movie sets.
If you loved watching The Exorcism and want to indulge in some more possession-based horror films, look no further. Here’s a list of all the movies that you can watch next!

The horror film The Exorcism, which was formerly known as The Georgetown Project and stars Russell Crowe, received a theatrical release in North America on June 21st (you can read our review Here) – and now we’ve learned that it’s scheduled for VOD release just two and half weeks after it hit the big screen. As of July 9th, genre fans will have the chance to watch The Exorcism in the comfort of their own home.
Crowe recently played real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, which could turn out to be a franchise starter. He actually worked on this movie before making The Pope’s Exorcist – in fact, The Exorcism was first announced four and a half years ago. So it’s good to see it finally making its way out into the world.
Coming our way from Miramax, producer Kevin Williamson, and Outerbanks Entertainment,...

The director of The Vourdalak, Adrien Beau recommends six horror favorites.
Family is the ultimate encapsulation of society. It offers us a taste of the whole world, but at a molecular level – and is very convenient if you want to destroy the world via your storytelling. The Greeks knew it with their tragedies, and we’re still using it to this day.
The tale of The Vourdalak is about how a monster can destroy their relatives from within, feeding one by one on those they love the most. In our case it’s a fatherly, patriarchal figure who has transformed into something inhuman… but the horrible threat can come from elsewhere in the family unit.
Here, I share my five favorite horror films about that very topic…
Horror Featuring… The Father And Mother
Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining, of course, is my definitive pick when it comes to fear of one’s father.

This article contains spoilers for "The Bear" season 3.
Previous seasons of "The Bear" have established that Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is something of a cinephile bro. The dude loves Michael Mann -- his "gofastboatsmojito" WiFi password is a hilarious shout-out to Mann's 2006 "Miami Vice" movie -- and he has a "White Squall" poster on the wall of his home, signaling his appreciation for one of director Ridley Scott's biggest box office bombs. In season 3, we find out that Richie is a fan of another uber-masculine director: the late, great William Friedkin.
In episode 4, "Violet," Richie walks into Sugar's (Abby Elliott) office and tapes a photo of a Japanese zen garden to her wall. When she asks what the photo is, he tells her a story:
"Oh, Zen garden. Kyoto, Philosopher's Path [...] well, this director that I admire, he visited this. And when he got there, he was like, 'What is this?...

Sony and Legendary’s upcoming adaptation of Street Fighter may have lost its directors, but it’s gained a firm release date.
Sony and Legendary have announced that their upcoming movie adaptation of Street Fighter will be arriving in cinemas worldwide on the 20th March 2026. The announcement comes just days after it was revealed that the film’s directors, Danny and Michael Philippou – aka RackaRacka – have departed the project due to scheduling reasons.
The brothers made 2023’s body horror success Talk To Me for A24, and are signed up to work with the same studio again for Bring Her Back, a project that is set to enter production imminently. We’d imagine that given a choice between retaining the brothers and securing this release date, Sony and Legendary opted for the latter and so (as far as we know) we have one of those situations where a project has been...

His contribution to horror cinema is undeniable, with Freddy Krueger becoming one of the most iconic characters in the genre’s history. Englund’s work has transcended the original franchise,...

The Exorcism writer/director Joshua John Miller and writer M.A. Fortin take us behind the scenes in the making of the Russell Crowe horror movie. While it was inspired by the real stories of cursed movies like The Exorcist and The Omen, the filmmakers reveal the story has its basis in their own horror stories working on certain projects in Hollywood.

With the recent news that Tubi surpassed Max, Disney+ and Paramount+, it got me thinking about how far the service has come. It was mostly just seen as a joke but now it’s beating some of the heavy hitters. I’m not exactly shocked as even my grandparents have proclaimed their love for Tubi. The ease of access is always going to be the biggest winner for the average viewer. Plus the fact that it’s Free doesn’t hurt either. At a time where other streaming services are adding ads of their own and increasing their paid tiers to absurd prices, services like Tubi become more and more appealing.
Tubi has come a long way since its days of direct-to-streaming shlock. Sure, there are classics like Child’s Play, Interview with the Vampire, Pumpkinhead, The Descent and Near Dark. But what about some titles that are more off the beaten path?...

In The Exorcism, Russell Crowe plays an actor and recovering addict terrorized by demons, personal and otherwise. His character, an actor on the set of a fictional horror movie, also happens to be terrorized by a cruel director (Adam Goldberg), something with which director Joshua John Miller has a lot of experience.
Joshua John Miller, who co-wrote The Exorcism with M.A. Fortin (The Final Girls), pulled from personal experiences when creating his psychological family drama meets possession horror story. It’s hard not to see the parallels between the director and Crowe’s character, Arthur Miller, an actor struggling to find his footing again when he lands a role as the priest in an exorcism horror movie. Joshua John Miller, the son of late actor Jason Miller (The Exorcist), started his film career as an actor at age eight and amassed notable acting credits that include Halloween III: Season of the Witch,...

It’s a shame that The Exorcism, co-written and directed by Joshua John Miller — the son of The Exorcist actor Jason Miller — is a sloppy and unsatisfying genre exhumation. Miller and co-author M.A. Fortin flaunted oodles of metatextual proficiency with their superb horror-comedy The Final Girls that are nowhere to be found in their sophomore feature. Miller’s direction chases New Nightmare and Scream 3 highs by seeking inspiration from supposed haunted productions like The Exorcist and Poltergeist, but behind-the-scenes perspectives are frequently and confusingly dropped like a hot potato. The Exorcism fails the prospect of a bible-verse-chanting exorcism on a horror film set, spiraling from mundanity into a third act that abandons conceptual intrigue for the most forgettable finale imaginable.

Russell Crowe (The Pope’s Exorcist) stars in the new possession horror movie The Exorcism, which Vertical has brought to theaters nationwide beginning today, June 21.
Crowe plays a Hollywood actor in the meta horror film, and he suits up as a faux exorcist in the exclusive sneak preview clip below. You’ll also find the film’s trailer underneath.
Joshua John Miller, who wrote 2015’s The Final Girls and also starred in films including Near Dark and And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird, directed The Exorcism.
Joshua John Miller also wrote the script with M.A. Fortin (The Final Girls). This one is personal for Miller, as his late father was the star of the best possession movie ever made.
Miller said in a statement, “The origins of the film stem from my childhood spent watching my father, Jason Miller, playing the doomed Father Karras flinging himself out a window at the climax of The Exorcist.

Making a film that trades on the mysterious production problems with the original The Exorcist seems like a good idea. But how to go about such a meta task?
Within the film-within-a-film genre, there’s a sub-genre: think Willem Dafoe as a vampire/actor in Shadow of the Vampire or Nicole Kidman as a witch/actor in the disastrous comedy flop Bewitched.
Obviously, remaking The Exorcist would be a daunting project. But The Exorcism is a film about that daunting project. And the lead character is possessed.
If you were expecting Regan, the girl, to be possessed, I can’t blame you. But no, this time, it’s the priest who is possessed.
The Exorcism has nothing in common with last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist except that RussellCrowe stars in both. It’s also not related to the recent Exorcist: Believer. But since they’re both Exorcist-inspired films with wide release,...

Following his appearance in the solid possession thriller The Pope’s Exorcist in 2023, Russell Crowe returned to the supernatural genre once again, with his new horror flick The Exorcism. Sharing the screen with David Hyde Pierce and Ryan Simpkins, Crowe delved into the story of a troubled actor who unravels the dark side while filming a horror movie.

However, despite playing a victim of possession in the film, it wasn’t Russell Crowe who was scared of the other side, in real life. It was his co-star David Hyde Pierce, who recounted a spine-chilling experience while preparing for the film, that left him shaken to the core.
David Hyde Pierce’s Terrifying Preparation Experience for The Exorcism
Unlike Russell Crowe who came with previous experience of delving into the hardcore horror genre, David Hyde Pierce met with entirely first-hand experiences while filming the freshly released The Exorcism.

Joshua John Miller and his personal and creative partner, M.A. Fortin, never set out to make a movie about an exorcism because, as Fortin says to Miller, “Your father stars in the greatest one of all time.”
Miller’s dad was the actor Jason Miller, who played Father Damien Karras in “The Exorcist.” He often told Joshua stories of the purportedly haunted set, recounting fires that started around the production and the injuries and deaths that would impact those who worked on the film.
That real-life experience was one of the big inspirations for “The Exorcism,” a new movie Joshua directed and co-wrote with Fortin, in which Russell Crowe plays Anthony Miller, an actor portraying a priest in what looks to be a modern “Exorcist” remake while living with his estranged daughter Lee (Ryan Simpkins).

Last year was quite fruitful for horror flicks, and you may have seen at least one of them. These include M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, A24’s Beau Is Afraid and Talk to Me or Blumhouse’s sensational video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s.
However, there was a lesser-known horror that truly deserves much more attention than the mentioned titles, as it elevates the genre to a new level. Luckily, it is now getting significantly more viewership, as it’s conquering Netflix’s global top 10.
Its plot revolves around Pedro and Jimmy, two brothers who find a man who gets infected by a mysterious demon in a nearby farmhouse. Understanding that he’s about to give birth to evil itself, the brothers try to exorcise the tormentor, but fail to do it.

Director Joshua John Miller has a distinctly personal perspective on William Friedkin’s seminal horror classic The Exorcist: his father, Jason Miller, played the reluctant protagonist Father Karras. Yet, seeing his father die on screen in a horror movie isn’t the sole source of inspiration behind The Exorcism, an ambitious, personal piece of meta-horror. Miller and co-writer/partner M.A. Fortin (The Final Girls) channel their rage and experiences with grief into a family psychological drama, one that uses possession horror as connective tissue. However, combining personal family drama with scathing critiques of the Church and Hollywood ultimately means that The Exorcism struggles under the immense weight of its ambition.

The Exorcist directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty is considered, still, perhaps the greatest horror film of all time, certainly the most popular. The 1973 movie was even nominated for 10 Oscars and won two, unheard of in the genre at that time. It has been endlessly imitated for the past half century right up to now, recently and notably David Gordon Green’s critically reviled 2023 reboot The Exorcist: Believer, which even brought original Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn back into the fold after all these decades. But the Og is impossible to touch, so what was going through Joshua John Miller’s mind when he decided to take on a new film so closely linked to it?
Director and co-writer (with M.A. Fortin) of The Exorcism, Miller has the 1973 film in his family bones, even if he wasn’t born until a year after its release. His father is Jason Miller,...

However you look at it, the fact that Russell Crowe has chosen to make two exorcist movies in as many years is a very strange decision. It’s like Jason Statham deciding to play another bee-keeper, or Glen Powell playing another hitman. Whatever the reasoning behind his decision, Crowe’s second exorcism movie, The Exorcism, is sadly disappointing, a murky, near-nonsensical effort with nothing to offer but jump scares.
In fairness, you can maybe see Crowe’s thinking when you take a closer look at the film’s pedigree. It’s directed by Joshua John Miller, the son of Jason Miller, who played Father Damien in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist.
