This week on the Nightmare on Film Street podcast we explore a close encounter of the 4th kind as depicted in the 1989 cult classic Communion (1989). Starring a truly unparalleled performance from Christopher Walken, this particular alien encounter has become on the most talked about experience in the world of Ufology and gave us the haunting extraterrestrial visage we’ve come to commonly refer to as “The Greys”.
Your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon want to believe but it’s hard to stay focused when you’ve got Christopher Walken dancing around with a raw duck, or when he’s crawling around with a bunch of alien hybrid babies on a spaceship, screaming at a doppelganger of himself dressed as a magician. Communion is a wild ride. Some might even say it’s **drumroll** out this world…

The Star-studded Cast Adds Up Adam Scott headlines ‘Severance’, supported by an impressive ensemble including Patricia Clarkson, Christopher Walken, and John Turturro. If you thought Severance was just another sci-fi series, think again. This show is reportedly one of the most expensive TV productions ever. Let’s delve into the reasons behind this. High Salaries for Star-Studded Cast One major factor driving costs is the high salaries for its ensemble cast, which includes Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, and Christopher Walken. Just to compare, the cast of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ earned $1 million per episode in their later seasons, and ‘Friends’ cost $10 million per episode in its final season. Frank Herbert’s sandy lore is returning to the screens once again through Dune: Prophecy and the buzz surrounding it couldn’t be stronger. After the majestic success of Denis Villeneuve’s film series based on Herbert’s novel series of the same name, the hype around the saga is still as strong as ever, and fans are hoping for nothing but the best.

That being said, there is one interesting element about this upcoming series that is good news for fans: The fact that the show will be adapting one major arc from the novels about the Imperium. What makes this all the more worth waiting for is that this arc wouldn’t be as minutely adapted as Villeneuve’s saga did and would explore it more widely.

When Duke Leto Atreides took on stewardship of Arrakis, he did so at the behest of the Imperium. The transfer of stewardship featured all manner of pomp, which cost the Imperium “1.46 million and 62 solares,” according to Mentat Thufir Hawat.
Those external shows of extravagance are about all that viewers get to see with the Imperium, in both Dune and its sequel Dune: Part Two. Even when Christopher Walken joined the cast of the second film as Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, he makes only infrequent appearances, surely not enough to flesh out the Imperium’s workings.
Fortunately, the newest teaser for the HBO series Dune: Prophecy promises more attention to the Imperium. Most of the teaser focuses on the Bene Gesserit, the secretive coven of powerful women. Directed by Doug Trumbull, 1983 sci-fi thriller Brainstorm could have been deleted as an insurance write-off – but then a London bank intervened.
When Warner Bros announced its plans to effectively delete the films Batgirl, Scoob 2 and Coyote Vs Acme, the reaction was one of outrage. Studios destroying films as a tax write-off is nothing new, however: on the 21st June 1933, the Charlie Chaplin film A Woman Of The Sea (previously called Sea Gulls) was burned on the steps of Chaplin’s own studio. The five witnesses who saw the negative go up in flames then signed a letter confirming that the film had been lost to history.
A film directed and produced by one of the most important visual effects pioneers of the 20th century almost suffered a similar fate. Brainstorm, which went into production in the early 1980s, was directed by Doug Trumbull and featured a superb cast, including Christopher Walken,...

Natalie Wood was the former child actress who racked up three Oscar nominations before she was 25, Wood’s life ended in a tragedy that often overshadows her movie career. Yet many of her titles remain classics, so let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Wood snagged her first starring role when she was just nine years old in the holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947), playing a precocious girl who tugs on Santa Claus’ beard. She earned her first Oscar nomination when she was 17 for the juvenile delinquent drama “Rebel Without a Cause” (Best Supporting Actress in 1955), which made an icon out of James Dean, who died before its release. Wood added two more Best Actress bids to her resume with the romantic melodramas “Splendor in the Grass” (1961) and “Love with the Proper Stranger” (1963).

In addition to Krusty the Clown, Bumblebee Man and, very briefly, Gabbo, one of Springfield’s most famous entertainers is, of course, Rainier Wolfcastle, star of the popular McBain movies, as well as Undercover Nerd and Help! My Son Is a Nerd (it isn’t a comedy).
The McBain franchise, which was first introduced in the second season of The Simpsons, is an action parody smorgasbord containing elements of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, with a healthy dose of every movie Arnold Schwarzenegger ever made — although Schwarzenegger would later rip off Rainier Wolfcastle, so it all evens out in the end.
As we’ve mentioned before, those early clips of McBain were designed to form one cohesive story — a more cohesive one than some real Schwarzenegger movies, to be honest. Fans, in fact, have even edited the scenes together as if it were a real film.

A teaser for the second season of Severance previews more tension and regret for Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, and John Turturro. Although not much happens in the half-minute or so clip, it gives a sense of how Apple TV+’s pseudo-serious satire of Americans’ inability to achieve a work-life balance could continue when the series returns on Jan. 17.
The clip begins with the four characters donning their company IDs as they enter the elevator, which severs their work life from their personal life. The voiceover replays them reading...

More than two years after its cliffhanger Season 1 finale, Apple TV+ and the employees at Lumon are getting back to work.
On Wednesday, the streaming service announced “Severance” will make its long-awaited return on January 17, 2025. The date announcement was accompanied by a brief teaser that ended with an ominous warning for Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) uttered by a new character, played by Gwendoline Christie: “You should’ve never left.”
Here’s the Apple synopsis for the show:

Good news: "Severance" is finally returning for season 2! Bad news: it won't return until next year. For reference, the first season of the hit Apple TV+ series dropped in 2022, which feels like several lifetimes ago at this point. And look, I get it — the Hollywood strikes played a part in the delay. But having your second season arrive three full years after season 1 is a little crazy. But at least that gives everyone plenty of time to go back and rewatch season 1 to refresh their memories.
Speaking of memories, "Severance" is a wild show about a group of people who have "surgically divided" their memories between work and home. When they go to work, a whole new mindset kicks in, and when they go home, they have no memory whatsoever of what they did all day. As you might imagine, this leads to complications and moral questions, especially when a new hire makes it very,...

Apple TV+ released a teaser for Season 2 of the workplace thriller, which will debut on the streamer on Friday, Jan. 17. The 10-episode season will drop weekly episodes on Fridays after that.
Adam Scott stars as Mark Scout, who works a desk job at a mysterious biotech company known as Lumon. The controversial corporation performs procedures in which employees’ psyches are bifurcated to separate work memories from personal memories, creating Innies (employees’ at-work personas) and Outties (their selves outside of the office). Patricia Arquette stars as the manager of the severed employees, as well as Mark’s next-door neighbor. Is cinema really gendered? Well, we would like to say no, but reality says otherwise. Although all movies can be enjoyed by both men and women, there are some that are more obviously made for each group.
For example, we know that silly romantic comedies are mostly watched by female audiences looking for love adventures, and hardcore action thrillers are mostly watched by men. But lately, there have been too many movies made for male audiences, and it seems that the creators have forgotten what a perfect male movie should be like.
We're tired of all the modern clichés that famous action actors like Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone bring to the genre, so let's take a look back and talk about these 5 real old manly dramas.

It’s funny that we decided to start with this movie, because many of you may only know the late version...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Christopher Walken Gets to Dance and Steve Martin Sings… Sort of?
Known for his BBC TV series “The Singing Detective,” starring Michael Gambon, and “Pennies from Heaven,” which launched the career of Bob Hoskins, British journalist and screenwriter Dennis Potter seemed to have a fascination with the music trapped inside our inner beings. Mixing fantastical musical sequences with harsh dramatic realities, Potter used spectacle to expose his characters’ complex natures, as well as the complex nature of the world around them, with biting wit and stunning inventiveness. In a candid conversation on Shannen Doherty‘s Let’s Be Clear podcast, acclaimed actress Katherine Heigl opened up about the controversy around her decision not to submit herself for an Emmy nomination in 2008 in her tenure on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
Heigl, who had previously won an Emmy for her portrayal of Dr. Izzie Stevens, found herself at the center of a media storm after her comments regarding the lack of material she received that season. However, the actress now seeks to set the record straight and dispel the notion that she had outright “turned down” the nomination.
“I didn’t turn it down,” Heigl clarified. “You have to submit yourself. You have to submit your work, and then they deliberate and then they decide if they want to give you a nomination. I just didn’t submit my work that year.”

Ranker is a popular place on the Internet where people can rank whatever they want, however, they want, and whenever they want. This is always a fan-focused ranking system, and it is never officially tied to the people behind the projects in question. Recently, a large survey was organized on Ranker, whose goal was to determine the best TV shows in the last five years. The list includes more than 600 titles, but in our report, we have decided to list the top ten series from the site to provide you with better insight, combined with our original comments and opinions, which will add flavor to the whole report.
Of course, since this is indeed an important list, we have decided to report on it, so we are going to bring you the results by listing the top 10 series on this list, from 10th to first place. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

Sony’s comic book film Madame Web launched to derision in February. We take a look at what went wrong with a potentially interesting thriller…
Spoilers lie ahead – and lots of them – for Madame Web.
Much has already been written about Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent calamity Madame Web following its initial cinema release on the 14th February this year. But because of the breakneck pace the modern cultural world moves at, it already feels as though the conversation has moved on; director Sj Clarkson’s comic book supernatural thriller made its streaming debut in May and barely made a ripple.
This is unfortunate, because number one, Madame Web deserves some sort of cult status for its sheer oddness. And number two, it deserves to be studied as a cautionary example of what not to do if you want to tell a coherent, engrossing story.
So what’s wrong with Madame Web,...

Austin Butler is making a name for himself not just as a talented up-and-coming star, but as a man with a penchant for weird voices. Much like his "The Bikeriders" co-star Tom Hardy (a man who's given us a smorgasbord of weird voices in his time), Butler is showing promise as a master of what Hardy termed the "vocal silhouette." His "Dune: Part Two" voice simply demands further examination, for example, but it was his complete transformation for Baz Luhrman's "Elvis" that gave us the most significant vocal tone. In fact, Butler basically reinvented himself as the King of Rock n' Roll for the movie. After a five-month audition that was unlike any other for "Elvis," he disappeared into the character for three years and claimed to lose touch with who he really was by the end of it.
Still, all that dedication seems to have been worth it. Butler...

It’s not a done deal and nothing has been formally announced, but it sure looks like we just got a release date for “Dune: Part Three.”
Warner Bros. on Friday issued an update to its theatrical distribution calendar, swapping out an “untitled WB Family Event Film” for what is now an “Untitled WB/Legendary/Denis Villeneuve Event Film in IMAX.” It will open on December 18, 2026.
We’re no detectives, let alone the Lisan al-Gaib, but our intuition from the spice tells us this is almost cetrainly another “Dune” movie. And no, Villeneuve isn’t planning a family film either.
Reps for Warner Bros. and Legendary declined to comment.
Villeneuve has been talking about a potential threequel incessantly, even before “Dune: Part Two” turned out to be a hit. Zendaya has also said she’s ready to go whenever Villeneuve decides to call.
We don’t know if Villeneuve intends...

Quentin Tarantino‘s 1994 sophomore feature Pulp Fiction wasn’t just a major break out hit. It changed the face of cinema in the 1990s, both by helping bring attention to indie and foreign films, and by inspiring a host imitators. When audiences lined up to watch Tarantino’s bloody, whip-smart movie, studios rushed to fill theaters and video stores with more stories about loquacious hitmen, monologuing bank robbers, and foul-mouthed gun molls.
In most cases, these knockoffs provided cheap thrills, heavy on the violence and pop-cultural references but low on Tarantino’s sense of composition and ear for unique dialogue. In the best cases, Pulp Fiction‘s success made way for other great movies to get made, oddball films ignored by the studios until Tarantino convinced them that they could make money.
Here are the fifteen best Pulp Fiction influenced movies of the 1990s, those that stand on their own...

Rules are made to be broken. Probably this belief is the main reason why so many creative things happen in the world. Especially we love how the movie industry changes thanks to it: the genres get mixed, the stories get more and more complicated, and the outcome is often very unpredictable.
One of the gifts of creative thinking is definitely the existence of dark comedies, and we think whoever is responsible for their creation is a genius. So here is the list of the 5 best dark comedies that may or may not feel guilty about laughing at.
1. Dr. Strangelove (1964)
One of Stanley Kubrick’s most popular movies is considered to be this one, and it also works as sort of a staple for the dark comedy genre. It’s interesting though that the inspiration to create this movie came to Kubrick out of fear of nuclear destruction… So he decided...

By this point, we all know how fortunate we are that we got to see Denis Villenueve's two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel "Dune" in its entirety. Warner Bros. clearly believed in Villenueve as a visionary by giving him a $160 million budget to adapt the first chunk of Herbert's book after the filmmaker's last movie for the studio, "Blade Runner 2049," severely underperformed commercially. The gamble itself wasn't on Villenueve. WB knew he could build massive worlds and tell a compelling story within them. It was on the material to sell itself. Was a nuanced tale of political intrigue set on a desert planet of interest to mainstream audiences?

This four-part, so-far-untitled documentary series about the rise and rise of Hollywood’s least likely marquee-name director starts out with a tribute from Christopher Walken that will be very hard for the next three instalments to match. In that inimitable… sta-cc-a-to… Way… of his, the Sleepy Hollow star recalls his former dance teacher saying to him: “Chris, show me something I never saw before. And that’s what Tim does. Every time.”
That, by any metric, is a high bar, and, for the first hour of this docuseries at least, the hyperbole is justified: Whether Tim Burton’s 39-year career in feature films — one imagines the imminent release of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice must have scuppered the nice, round 40 — will keep viewers glued to the next three is another matter. But while Tara Wood’s documentary is clearly in the director’s corner, it does, convincingly, chart the most unlikely of outsiders...

Mark Scout’s heading back to work! Yes, two years and a couple of SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike-related delays since we last saw him on our screens, Adam Scott’s everyman office worker is getting ready to return to Lumon Industries in Severance Season 2. And, during a project-packed Apple TV Plus presentation at their Wwdc event, the streaming giant shared a tantalising first look — finally! — at what awaits in the second season of Dan Erickson’s off-kilter workplace thriller. Check it out below:

The Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborations are certainly prolific. While Depp was a teen star on the Fox series 21 Jump Street, he had a weird creative force inside of him that a high school cop series didn’t fulfill. Then came a new movie called Edward Scissorhands that paired Depp with his long-time director friend. Deadline reports that Depp is being featured in a new docu-series that’s a retrospective on the career of Tim Burton, and the actor reveals who he beat out for the part of Edward.
According to People, Depp said the competition was stiff for the titular character and names like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, were being considered for the role. Depp explained that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story.” Depp admitted to thinking, “He’s never going to cast...

Apple TV+ is offering extended severance.
The hit science-fiction series “Severance” debuted its first image from the second season at the tech giant’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. It featured the show’s lead, Adam Scott, in an eerie white hallway holding some cerulean balloons, wearing an ID badge, and looking determined.
Production on the second season ended in April. The precise launch date hasn’t been announced, but since further glimpses were included in a “Coming to Apple TV+” video, one can expect it sometime this year.
“Severance” was created by Dan Erickson, and its first season was directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. The show satirizes business culture with a process (called severance!) in which employees have their minds and memories effectively bisected, such that they can’t remember their home life while at work or their work life while at home. Complications ensue!

Apple TV has had a string of successes with its television series recently, and 2022’s hit Severance is one of the most talked-about series from the platform’s library. The sci-fi series became an absolute hit, earning numerous awards and nominations. Of course, a second season of the series was ordered quickly, and we can happily confirm that the second season will premiere later this year; an exact date has not been revealed, but a release window is also fine at this point. The series is going to continue from the enigmatic ending of the first season, explaining what is going to happen to the main characters after the shocking truths and revelations from Season 1.
In light of that, we can confirm that Apple has released some initial materials from the season on social media, so we can confirm that we have a first-look photo, as well as a first-look teaser trailer.
