Banel & Adama (Ramata-Toulaye Sy)
A directorial debut programmed into the main Cannes competition is typically viewed with suspicion, if not overlooked altogether. Very rare is that lightning-in-a-bottle moment like the arrival of Son of Saul some years back. Typically, the only conversation these debuts generate is the critical debate as to why they’ve been elevated to the top of the pile when there are far more striking debuts buried deeper within the festival. This often means that accomplished films are overlooked and underappreciated by those on the ground, who may be subconsciously comparing a striking feature to the work of more established names it’s competing against for the Palme d’Or, approaching each debut with a “show me” attitude it...

David Lynch’s career as a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and artist is distinguished by his unique style, delving deeply into the human psyche with captivating, dreamlike visuals. As an auteur, he masterfully fuses experimental film techniques, blending unconventional horror and avant-garde cinema with box office profits.
Before making his first experimental shorts he studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the sixties. His foray into film began with a one-minute short he created for a contest in Philadelphia that led him to the American Film Institute, where he made The Grandmother (1970) and started working on the indie cult classic, Eraserhead (1976).
Lynch went mainstream with The Elephant Man (1980) and ventured into science fiction with Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s novel and starring Kyle MacLachlan. Lynch would continue to collaborate with MacLachlan in future projects, including his next art house project,...

“All Quiet on the Western Front” took the 2023 Oscars by storm, racking up nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The German film won Best International Feature, Best Score, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, but its BAFTA-nominated director, Edward Berger, was snubbed despite the Best Adapted Screenplay bid he shared with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell. Now Berger seeks redemption with his 2024 thriller “Conclave,” which looks like an early Oscar favorite according to our current Gold Derby odds.
“Conclave” is a psychological thriller based on Robert Harris‘ 2016 novel of the same name. In the film, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, where he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of The Church. It was scripted by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).

At long last, we now have at least one festival premiere set for one of our most-anticipated films of the year. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path, a remake of his superb, bad-vibes 1998 thriller that stars Damien Bonnard, Mathieu Amalric, Ko Shibasaki, and Drive My Car‘s Hidetoshi Nishijima, is now set for a premiere as part of San Sebastián Film Festival’s Official Selection.
Taking place September 20-28, the lineup also features the latest from Edward Berger, Gia Coppola, Costa-Gavras, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Mike Leigh, Diego Lerman, Joshua Oppenheimer, and François Ozon. While we could see Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path pop up at other fall fests, it’s exciting to know it’s finally seeing the light of day.

Two Netflix Originals and new movies from Mike Leigh, Joshua Oppenheimer, Gia Coppola and Edward Berger will vie for San Sebastian’s top Golden Shell this September.
The festival features a main competition that is stronger than usual on both bigger-name directors and ‘A’ list stars, such as Tilda Swinton in Oppenheimer’s “The End,” Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” and the ensemble cast of Berger’s “Conclave” that includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.
Bound for Toronto and Telluride before San Sebastián, Oppenheimer’s “The End” stars Swinton, George MacKay and Michael Shannon in what is described as a post-apocalyptic “Golden Age” musical.
“Conclave,” from “All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger,” is a psychological thriller written by Peter Straughan, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow.

The 51st Telluride Film Festival promises to be a star-studded affair, with several high-profile movies expected to debut at the top of awards season.
As is customary, the full lineup, including screening schedules, isn’t announced until the day before the festival begins. This year’s festivities take place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2. So longtime attendees, both press and cinephile enthusiasts, now look to the classifications of movies playing at Venice, Toronto and New York Film Festivals to gather clues on what could be shown during the Colorado-set festival.
The Toronto Film Festival lineup provides reliable clues. The labels for the films as “World,” “International,” “North American,” or “Canadian” premieres offer the most significant hints on what might stop at Telluride during the Labor Day weekend festivities. The timing of TIFF (Sept. 5 to Sept. 15) leaves no other festivals to claim the premiere designations beforehand, making these guesses quite reliable, give or take any last-minute changes.

“If you make this choice, you are no longer welcome at UCLA,” Laura Dern was told when she requested time off to make Blue Velvet.
Then aged 17, Laura Dern was thrilled to land a major part in David Lynch’s 1986 thriller, Blue Velvet. Unfortunately, the powers that be at her university were less impressed.
Speaking to Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on their podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name (via Variety), Dern recounted the moment where she had to choose between her education and working with one of America’s great maverick directors. She’d only been at UCLA for two days, she recalled, when she successfully auditioned for the part of Sandy Williams – one of the film’s central characters.
When Dern went to the head of UCLA’s film department to request time off to appear in the movie, however, the answer was a resounding ‘absolutely not’.

At the start of her film career, Laura Dern took a big risk, quitting college to star in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.
The Big Little Lies star recalled she learned she had landed the role of Sandy Williams in the 1986 psychological thriller two days after starting college.
“I was 17, so excited to get into UCLA,” Dern said in the most recent episode of Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, co-hosted by Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. “I was there for two days, and I had auditioned and got offered the role in Blue Velvet.”
At the time, Dern was studying psychology and minoring in journalism. She asked the head of the film department for a leave of absence but was denied.
Dern tried to plead her case, saying she would “write papers” and “double-up classes” when she returned, but the UCLA administrators did not waver.

Laura Dern appeared on a recent episode of Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast (via People) and remembered being forced to drop out of UCLA film school after she won the role of Sandy Williams in David Lynch’s 1986 masterpiece “Blue Velvet.” While Dern had already appeared in films such as “Mask,” it was “Blue Velvet” that served as her acting breakthrough and kicked off a career-spanning collaboration with Lynch.

Laura Dern gave up her college education for David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. The actress recalled this week that the University of California, Los Angeles, refused to grant her a leave of absence to film the movie, meaning she left for the project and never returned.

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
Among those movies making their world premieres is the Angelina Jolie-directed war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. There’s also Mike Leigh’s first movie in six years, Hard Truths, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, which is billed as an “ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Gia Coppola has the drama The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, which follows a seasoned stage dancer who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

Edward Berger’s follow-up to All Quiet On The Western Front is Conclave – and here’s the trailer for the movie.
Off the back of the huge critical success of 2022’s All Quiet On The Western Front, director Edward Berger likely found himself with lots of options.
The director is certainly enjoying a bit of a moment, with some sources suggesting that he could be given the keys to the James Bond franchise next and tasked with successfully conceiving a new 007 to fill the rather large (and impeccably tasteful) shoes vacated by Daniel Craig.
Whether that comes to pass or not though, Berger’s next film to release will be Conclave, a papal drama set in the Vatican that centres around the secret process of selecting a new Pope after the death of the previous incumbent.
The filmmaker has drawn on some heavyweight talent for this adaptation. The source material is a Robert Harris book,...

Forget Pulp Fiction — how about some Pope fiction? Yes folks, following the Oscar- and BAFTA-award winning success of Edward Berger's anti-war epic All Quiet On The Western Front, the feted filmmaker is turning his attention from trench warfare to Catholic conspiracy with Conclave, an all-star adaptation of Robert Harris' international bestseller papal thriller. Ralph Fiennes leads the line-up for this one as Cardinal Lawrence, the man responsible for selecting a new Pope after the last one's death. It's a hard task made harder by some secretive shenanigans in the Vatican, as is evidenced in the gripping first trailer for the film. Check it out:
Gorgeous sets courtesy of Rome's legendary Cinecittà studios. Lavish production design. Acting heavyweights everywhere you turn. Volker Bertelmann back on scoring duties. Pardon the blasphemy but Jesus Christ this looks impressive! "No sane man would want the papacy. The men who are dangerous are the ones who do want it.

"This is a conclave, Aldo, not a war." "It Is a war. And you have to commit to a side!" Focus Features has revealed the first official trailer for the film titled Conclave, a papacy thriller from the German filmmaker, Edward Berger, behind the Oscar-nominated All Quiet on the Western Front a few years ago. This will likely premiere at both the 2024 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this fall, though they haven't confirmed it just yet. Based on the book by Robert Harris: "The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will gather to cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they are also not immune to the human temptations of power and glory. And they are not above the tribalism and factionalism that consumes humanity. When all is said and done,...

Ralph Fiennes’ Cardinal Lawrence is about to discover what unholy trouble looks like as he attempts to decide who will be the next Pope in Edward Berger‘s Conclave trailer. Acting as the person who judges the intensity of one’s love for the Lord and who is the best representative of the highest church is enough to make even the most devoted tremble with uncertainty. Imagine being the person who appoints the next Pope after the sudden passing of a world-famous and beloved figure. No, thank you. What if we add a conspiracy to the mix? Cluth your prayer beads tightly, folks; it will be a vicious contest.

At this, er, particular moment in American history, it’s almost comforting to be reminded that other institutions have had to withstand their own contentious and conspiracy-riddled election cycles. At least that’s one thing we can take an odd sort of solace in related to the rampant corruption in the Catholic Church,...

This post contains spoilers for "Enemy."
"It was Hegel that said that all the greatest world events happen twice, and then Karl Marx added: the first time it was a tragedy, the second time it was a farce," says history professor Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) during a lecture session when he's first introduced in "Enemy." While these words seem innocuous with respect to untangling the complex web of themes in Denis Villeneuve's 2014 film, they're actually the key to the central mystery that grips the dual protagonists. Viewing "Enemy" through a singular lens might not give us all the answers — or satisfactory ones, for that matter — so let us tackle some of the biggest questions that seem to confound viewers once the credits roll.
To offer a brief, yet superficial recap: Adam, who seems discontent with his life's numbing monotony, stumbles upon a film featuring someone who looks exactly like him.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Among these many ‘visionaries’ is Val Kilmer, who has no less than defined and refined the modern film industry with his excellent performances across genres. Originally a stage actor, Kilmer now stands out from his contemporaries for his perfect portrayals.

The State of the Race
Unlike the other acting categories, it seems like the best is yet to come for the Best Supporting Actress race. So far, two of the few performances that actually have stood out include Cannes winners Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez from musical crime drama “Emilia Pérez” (though Saldaña could possibly move up categories). Then there is Emily Watson, who won an award at the Berlin Film Festival for her role opposite recent Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy in “Small Things Like These,” which Lionsgate is set to distribute.

The most direct metaphor in David Lynch’s canon arrives early on in 1986’s Blue Velvet. After an opening credits sequence set against blue velvet curtains and accompanied by Angelo Badalamenti’s swooning score, Lynch offers up a montage of classic Americana, including gleaming white picket fences, a fire truck with a dog, and roses that gleam with a feverish red hue. Bobby Vinton’s version of the title song serves as the soundtrack to these images, and, with this song, Lynch signals both his yearning for and disbelief in this idyllic world—a conflict in emotions that would drive his subsequent film and television productions. In case this conflict is lost on viewers, Lynch ends his montage with a father collapsing from a malady as he waters his front yard, and the camera homes in on blades of grass, pressing further into the ground until we can see black insects festering underneath the surface.

David Lynch is one of the most critically acclaimed directors known for his surrealist and distinctive class of cinema. The filmmaker holds some masterpieces like Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart under his collar.
Despite his excellence in bringing some dark tales on-screen, Lynch is known to be a kind man on set. Being a reputed director, he is adored by his co-workers and fans except for that one instance where he lost his cool on a crew member.

For the past three years, the American Cinematheque has presented “Bleak Week,” an annual festival devoted to the greatest films ever made about the darkest side of humanity. This year, the festival will not only be unspooling in Los Angeles June 1 – 7 — with special guests including Al Pacino, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Karyn Kusama — but will travel to New York for the first time with a week of screenings at the historic Paris Theater starting June 9.
“We are honored to co-present ‘Bleak Week: New York’ in partnership with one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world,” Cinematheque artistic director Grant Moninger told IndieWire. “This year, over 10,000 people will attend ‘Bleak Week: Year 3’ in Los Angeles, proving that audiences are hungry for such powerful and confrontational cinema. Many people thought they were alone in their desire to explore films with uncomfortable truths, but the truth is that they are part of a large community,...

Ever since Roberts joined Lancôme as the brand ambassador, the French luxury cosmetics house has been a cult favorite of many women. She was originally paid $20 million for her deal with the L’Oréal-owned company, but her payment was upped when the company sealed a five-year deal with the Pretty Woman actress.

This post contains spoilers for "Blue Velvet."
David Lynch's cinematic world tiptoes between stark reality and nightmarish dreams, where quaint, perfect lives and locales often hide Boschian hells. While some Lynchian small towns are infused with poetic romanticism despite harboring great evils (such as Twin Peaks), others, like Lumberton, weave an insincere facade with its aura of suburban bliss: a sentiment that forms the crux of Lynch's sensational, oft-misunderstood "Blue Velvet." Most of Lynch's work defies objective analysis, as the foundational ideas he embeds into his stories feel abstract and elusive, but are always tethered to reality in essential and terrifying ways. Although "Blue Velvet" helms one of the most straightforward narratives in Lynch's oeuvre — it is neither as labyrinthine nor heady as "Inland Empire" or "Mulholland Drive" — the film's graphic depictions of psychosexual impulses tend to confuse and alienate, with the merging of the real and the...

Josh O’Connor stars a grief-stricken graverobber in Alice Rohrwacher’s gorgeous new film. Here’s our La Chimera review.
Italian director Alice Rohrwacher is a master of combining almost supernatural elements with the mundane. Her 2018 feature Happy As Lazzarro was an ambitious, spellbinding exploration of friendships and modern life. Rohrwacher’s latest film, La Chimera, once again combines magical realism and the humdrum with thrilling, if sometimes inaccessible results.
The film opens with a woman, as dreamt by Josh O’Connor’s grumbly archaeologist-turned-grave robber Arthur. Arthur is a man of few words, mourning the loss of his beloved Beniamina (Yile Vianello). We’re not privy to what exactly happened to Beniamina, but we’re acutely aware of Arthur’s bereavement.
Arthur has a bizarre talent of being able to locate buried treasure. He and his friends then sell the artefacts and reap short-lived benefits. One day, Arthur meets Italia...

New to Streaming: La Chimera, Let It Be, The Last Stop in Yuma County, Kim’s Video, The Dry 2 & More
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher)
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny perhaps garnered more press out of Cannes, another selection involving archaeologists and tomb raiders will have a longer shelf life. Alice Rohrwacher’s latest feature La Chimera ranked quite highly on our top 50 films of 2023 list for good reason. It’s a dreamy, magical odyssey in which the Italian director whisks viewers away with the kind of transportive vision she’s exuded in all her features thus far.
Where to Stream: VOD
Eileen (William Oldroyd)
Considering how many jokesters online talk about supporting women’s wrongs, Eileen should have made a billion dollars. Alas, not everyone can have impeccable taste. William Oldroyd’s character study grabs you from the first scene,...
