Blair Underwood is detailing why he opted to not join “Sex and the City” three seasons before his iconic turn as Dr. Robert Leeds.
Underwood told the A.V. Club that he first turned down a role earlier in the series that centered on Kim Cattrall dating a Black man.
Underwood was later cast as fan favorite sports medicine physician Dr. Robert Leeds, who becomes Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) boyfriend after moving into her building. The character appeared in multiple episodes of Season 6 in 2003.
“I actually did say ‘no’ the first time,” Underwood said. “The first time they had offered the role, to be honest with you, it was about how Samantha was fascinated by dating a Black man and wanted to know if, uh, all of the rumors were true about our anatomy! And I said, ‘Listen, I’m honored, thank you, but I just don’t want to play a character based on race,...

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

The 62nd edition of the New York Film Festival will kick off with RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys.”
Film at Lincoln Center made the announcement early Monday and notably didn’t specify a premiere designation for the film, perhaps an indication that “Nickel Boys” will have its world premiere at another festival such as the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, or Venice Film Festival.
“What an absolute honor for ‘Nickel Boys’ to open the 62nd New York Film Festival… a daydream really, for the crew, the cast, and team who’ve committed so wholeheartedly to its vision,” Ross said in a statement. A scene from pandemic-set lockdown dramedy New Strains. Courtesy of Memory
The low-key indie dramedy New Strains either succeeds or sucks, depending on what you’re seeking. For starters, do you want to recall the early days of the Covid pandemic through the eyes of a few others? That’s what co-directors, co-writers and co-stars Artemis Shaw and Prashanth Kamalakanthan serve up here. They portray, respectively, Kallia and Ram – a young couple staying in her uncle’s New York apartment as a getaway from their recent hassles and frustrations. Unfortunately, rather than explore the city honeymoon-style, the initial quarantine kicks in, sticking them in what becomes an unbearably claustrophobic situation.
She’s more energetic, romantic and sociable than her partner. He plunges into Woody Allen-esque anxiety, with a large dose of Howie Mandel-level germophobia, as this new peril with its unknown parameters shatters their plans… and moods. She’s horny; he’s paranoid.

In fitting Bob Newhart fashion, the legendary comic, who died this week at 94, liked to sell himself short.
In a 1986 Rolling Stone interview (conducted by future Law & Order boss Warren Leight!), Newhart referred to the secret sauce of his self-titled CBS sitcom as “Brevity. It’s saying it in the fewest number of words, and giving the audience some credit for being intelligent and being able to figure it out.”
Referring, later in the conversation, to his seminal early routine featuring a P.R. guy chatting with an unheard Abraham Lincoln on the phone and offering unsolicited notes on the Gettysburg Address, Newhart noted: “That Abe Lincoln routine is not funny on a piece of paper. It’s what isn’t said that’s funny.”
The Internet — source pending — also quotes Newhart summing up his overall persona with the observation, “I am a minimalist. I like saying the most with the least.

It’s not often that we get time to speak with figures from the golden age of horror, so when we do, we can’t help but get carried away. Today, we have the distinct pleasure of presenting an exclusive interview with a beloved icon of the genre, Lauren-Marie Taylor. Best known for her unforgettable role as Vickie in the cult classic Friday the 13th Part 2, Taylor has etched her name into the annals of horror history by being part of one of the most important slashers of the 80s.
More recently, she has made a return to horror in the critically acclaimed film, In a Violent Nature, which hit UK screens just last week. Taylor’s return to the genre has rekindled the interest and excitement of classic horror fans from all over. We were lucky enough to get an extensive slot of time with Lauren-Marie – and too much...

The Avenger Black Widow had a big target in 2021. In a case full of Hollywood intrigue and contractual clashes, Scarlett Johansson challenged Disney over the release strategy for her MCU solo film. The situation ended up sparking a big legal debate and also brought up some questions about how movies were released during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, although both parties reached a settlement, the situation seems to have been quite difficult for the actress, as she was going through a time of personal retreat. In the end, it was a significant learning experience for her.

We all love Scarlett Johansson for a number of reasons. She’s an incredible actor as well as an entrepreneur and has taken both fields by storm thanks to her hard work, talent, and determination. This makes us wonder, did a young ScarJo believe that she was going to make it big in the film industry one day? Before becoming the world’s favorite Black Widow, the actress did a handful of roles here and there which helped pave her way to fame.

It’s nearly been a year since Kevin Spacey was acquitted of all nine sexual offense charges in a U.K. criminal trial, and the two-time Oscar winner has publicly admitted that his career is still in the doldrums.
The two solitary projects of his that have released in the last 12 months — “Control” and “Peter Five Eight,” both low-budget indie features and far removed from the starry features he was leading before his glittering four-decade career imploded when allegations first emerged in 2017 — landed without much noise. In a tearful interview on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” in June, he claimed that he owed so “many millions” of dollars in legal fees that his house in the U.S had been foreclosed and he’d almost had to file for bankruptcy several times.
But while he may still be the highest profile actor effectively “canceled” by mainstream Hollywood in the wake of the #MeToo movement,...

Scarlett Johansson is herself a force to reckon with but even she felt a little nervous while working with the renowned director, Woody Allen. Known for films like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Midnight in Paris, and so on, Woody Allen has won four Academy Awards, 10 BAFTAs, 2 Golden Globes and so much more. All in all, he is a well-decorated filmmaker and it’s no surprise that actors would feel a little intimated in front of him.

In the current era of filmmaking, a movie is only as good as its marketing strategy. No other film proved this better than Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi action thriller The Island, which opened in 2005 to lackluster box office collections. However, the film later gained a cult following, with many appreciating the film’s ethical themes.
Johansson herself blamed the bad publicity and promotions that the studio did for the original sci-fi movie. Directed by Michael Bay before his Transformers days and co-written by Star Trek’s Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, the film only earned $162 million against a $126 million budget.

The 1997 movie awards season was shaping up to be surprisingly competitive in the early fall of that year. "L.A. Confidential," "Boogie Nights," and "The Sweet After" were making serious noise, while summer sleepers "The Full Monty" and "Ulee's Gold" appeared likely to stay in the picture as everyone awaited the arrival of presumed heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg's "Amistad," James L. Brooks' "As Good as It Gets," and Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." But when James Cameron's "Titanic," a wildly expensive coin flip from a director best known for popcorn flicks, began screening for critics and guilds in early November, everything clicked into place. The boat movie was an Oscar lock for Best Picture and Director, "As Good as It Gets" had Best Actor and Actress sewn up, and everyone else was playing for the honor to be nominated.

Film folklore is long shadowed by a story as intricate and subtle as the haunting hallways of the Overlook Hotel. It’s not going to be simple, but are you prepared to explore the rumors that circulated practically immediately after Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film The Shining came to light in 1980?
These murmurs weren’t just about the bone-chilling performance of Shelley Duvall, whose portrayal of the tortured wife almost immediately became the stuff of Hollywood legend. But it was also about the tempestuous sea that was the film’s production, where it was said that Kubrick, in his compulsive quest for perfection, demanded a symphony of takes for each scene, pushing Duvall to the brink of endurance.

Shelley Duvall, who famously starred as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining, among many other legendary roles, has died at the age of 75. Duvall died in her sleep Thursday (July 11th) due to complications from diabetes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Duvall was discovered by the legendary filmmaker Robert Altman while he was filming Brewster McCloud on location in Texas. Though she initially had no interest in acting, she agreed to appear in Brewster McCloud and continued to work with him on his next several films. Her breakout performance came in 1975 with Altman’s Nashville, and two years later, she received critical acclaim for her performance in 3 Women, also helmed by Altman, for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. Shelley Duvall, the saucer-eyed, rail-thin waif who starred in seven films directed by her mentor, Robert Altman, and avoided the ax wielded by an unhinged Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, died Thursday. She was 75.
Duvall died in her sleep of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas, Dan Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Gilroy said.
In November 2016, a disheveled Duvall appeared on an episode of the syndicated talk show Dr. Phil and revealed that she was suffering from mental illness. “I am very sick. I need help,” she said. Four years later, THR‘s Seth Abramovitch visited her for a memorable story.

In addition to Krusty the Clown, Bumblebee Man and, very briefly, Gabbo, one of Springfield’s most famous entertainers is, of course, Rainier Wolfcastle, star of the popular McBain movies, as well as Undercover Nerd and Help! My Son Is a Nerd (it isn’t a comedy).
The McBain franchise, which was first introduced in the second season of The Simpsons, is an action parody smorgasbord containing elements of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, with a healthy dose of every movie Arnold Schwarzenegger ever made — although Schwarzenegger would later rip off Rainier Wolfcastle, so it all evens out in the end.
As we’ve mentioned before, those early clips of McBain were designed to form one cohesive story — a more cohesive one than some real Schwarzenegger movies, to be honest. Fans, in fact, have even edited the scenes together as if it were a real film.

Say what you will about Sausage Party, but if you’ve ever wanted to watch a piece of anthropomorphic food call another piece of anthropomorphic food the c-word, or see the denizens of a supermarket aisle engaged in a protracted, graphic orgy, the animated hit is an irreplaceable part of the cinematic canon, putting the “whore” in “hors d’oeuvres,” as it were.
I’m not sure if even the most devoted of Sausage Party fans would say that the comedy had enough material to fill its 88-minute running time (the aforementioned orgy takes up roughly the last third of the film, or maybe it just feels like it does). But are there between 5 and 10 good and clever minutes? Yes, I would argue with some trepidation lest somebody come at me with a stopwatch, there are.
With similar trepidation, I’m prepared to say that there are between 5 and 10 good...

Plot: After 2016’s Sausage Party, most humans are dead, and food has become the dominant species. With no clue as to how to govern a new world and sustain a manufactured utopia, the system begins to break down. With failure looming and perishables in danger of surpassing their expiration dates, Frank (Seth Rogen), Brenda (Kristen Wiig), and Barry (Michael Cera) enlist one of the last remaining humans to help guide them toward democracy. All is going according to plan until an orange named Julius reshapes society in his twisted image. With little choice but to fight back, the biggest food fight in the history of foodkind ignites.
Review: Where do I begin? Are you like me in that you enjoy dark and absurdist comedy? You are? Oh good! You might have a blast with Sausage Party: Foodtopia, a continuation of 2016’s Sausage Party, so depraved and bizarre that you could...

Joseph Hardy, the stage director who introduced the enduring charmer You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, won a Tony Award for 1970’s Child’s Play and, as an executive producer in daytime drama, attempted to rescue the fading serial Ryan’s Hope with some of the most controversial changes in soap history, died June 6. He was 95.

When Nicole Holofcener was coming up in the ’90s, she was celebrated as that rare thing: a female writer-director. Today, she’s no longer a rarity, and she’s still delivering sharp, funny observational comedies about flawed middle-class New York women. But somehow, the breadth and potential of her talent remains elusive.
Hollywood gives her scripts to write and rewrite and polish (for the big bucks). She wrote, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” for Ridley Scott, crafting the Jodie Comer character, and the Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh roles in Marvel’s “Black Widow.” She made more on that three-week assignment than three of her movies combined, she said at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which tributed her this year, playing three of her films for an audience unfamiliar with her work. She’s currently writing for Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in Disney’s latest iteration of “Tron.

Actor Matthew Perry’s personal wealth has just been valued at more than $1.5 million following his death in 2023. The money will be put in a trust that is already worth more than $120 million.
Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing in Friends, was found dead in his hot tub last year with ketamine in his system. According to new court filings, he left a will with numerous beneficiaries, including his father, John Perry, mother, Suzanne Morrison, and half-sister, Caitlin Morrison, along with Rachel Dunn, an old ex-girlfriend. Perry and Dunn dated from 2003 to 2004.
The actor named the trust the “Alby Singer Living Trust” after Woody Allen‘s character in the movie Annie Hall.
The new filings show his personal property amounted to much more than his family and friends expected. The trustee of Perry’s estate filed an inventory and appraisal document showing a balance of $1,596,914.47, in addition to...

Following Matthew Perry‘s death on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, details continue to emerge, including the state of the beloved actor’s finances at the time of his passing. According to an inventory and appraisal document filed by Lisa Ferguson, one of the trustees of Perry’s estate, and obtained by People, the Friends star had $1,596,914.47 in his personal bank account at the time of his death. While this may not seem a huge amount for the Hollywood star, it’s expected Perry had many more assets that were not included in the filing. As previously reported, Perry’s will indicated that the majority of his belongings were placed in a trust named the “Alvy Singer Living Trust,” seemingly named after Woody Allen‘s character in Annie Hall. The details of what assets are included in the trust have not been revealed. The will also named Perry’s...

If the 1950s and '60s were the golden age of the television sitcom, the 1970s were its in-the-pocket prime. And when risk-averse TV execs saw the astronomical ratings of hit sitcoms like "All in the Family," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and "M*A*S*H," they exploited this ratings-rich phenomenon by diving into the same-but-different world of spinoffs.
Norman Lear's "All in the Family" was the '70s spinoff king with seven total offshoots, but James L. Brooks and Allan Burns' "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" proved plenty durable by spawning "Rhoda," "Phyllis," and "Lou Grant." Of these, "Rhoda" was by far the biggest hit. Valerie Harper's four seasons as Mary Richards' lovably vivacious neighbor more than confirmed she could carry a series of her own. So, Brooks and Allan sent Rhoda back to her hometown of New York City, where she immediately found love (her...

While it was hard not to find an Eddie Murphy film in theaters during the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, the multi-faceted talent has been more reserved in taking on roles over the last decade. Though he’ll soon be gracing television screens as classic character Axel Foley in Netflix’s upcoming “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” he’s not sure how many more movies he has left in him, but there is one project he’s been waiting for the right moment to take on.
“This one thing I’ve been threatening to do for years called ‘Soul, Soul, Soul,’ Murphy said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “It’s like this fake documentary that I love.”
Murphy described it as “a ‘Zelig’ kind of thing,” referring to the 1983 Woody Allen mockumentary about a fake figure of the 1920s whose desire to fit in caused him to...

The rise of Timothée Chalamet has been something to behold in an era where brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe have tended to swallow prospective movie stars whole. (There's a reason Chris Hemsworth was so nakedly happy to be working with an honest-to-goodness visionary like George Miller on "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.") Borrowing a page from the book of his fellow former teen heartthrob and mentor, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chalamet was careful to establish his credentials as a performer before hitching his name to a franchise. Over the span of just 10 years, he's already joined forces with some of the most renowned directors in the biz -- Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Luca Guadagnino, Denis Villeneuve, Paul King, and Greta Gerwig chief among them.

Is 2024 the year of the prequel? Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One just became the best in John Krasinski’s horror series. It’s an earnest, frightening, and delicately layered New York City apocalypse flick that impresses well beyond sound-seeking monsters. Sarnoski throws shades of Cloverfield, the Alien franchise, and [checks notes] The Bucket List into his A Quiet Place origin spin-off, even retaining his devotion to sublime flavors from Pig. It’s a dramatically rich invasion flick that doesn’t sacrifice either teary-eyed emotionality or obscene extraterrestrial aggression, constructing a tonal rollercoaster that whizzes by without any jerks or bumps in motion.
A Quiet Place: Part One is your average survival narrative about a dying hospice patient named Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) who wants to taste her favorite pizza slice—East Harlem’s iconic Patsy’s Pizzeria—one more time before unknown entities eradicate humanity. Gina Gershon’s body of work boasts a murderer’s row of formidable directors. Following her debut in John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink, she went on to appear in films by John Sayles, Robert Altman, John Woo, Michael Mann, Olivier Assayas, William Friedkin, and Woody Allen. Yet it’s two fateful collaborations in consecutive years—Paul Verhoeven on 1995’s Showgirls and the Wachowskis on 1996’s Bound—that loom largest over her filmography.
As Corky in Bound, Gershon displays a fierce commitment to the physical and emotional realism of a lesbian ex-con trying to restart her life, seamlessly transmuting the brooding of a classic noir protagonist into the body of a contemporary butch plumber. This makes it all the easier to understand how she’d fall for a traditional femme fatale like Jennifer Tilly’s Violet.

We were just remarking a few weeks ago how it’s the summer of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, with the largest-ever U.S. retrospective of the British masters now underway and the Martin Scorsese-narrated documentary Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger coming in July. Now another filmmaker behind what is sure to be one of the most-discussed fall films is paying tribute to the filmmakers.
“Queer will be my most personal film,” Luca Guadagnino tells Cinecitta when it comes to his forthcoming William S. Burroughs adaptation. “It’s a tribute to Powell and Pressburger. I’ve seen The Red Shoes at least 50 times and I think they would appreciate the sex scenes in Queer, which are numerous and quite scandalous.”

It’s always a cultural event when a celebrity is arrested, but often enough, people are willing to forgive someone who has starred in great movies, dazzled as a pro athlete, or recorded favorite hit singles. Justin Timberlake, however, can no longer trade on his history with ‘NSync or his peak as a solo artist to stay in the public’s good graces: when he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons early on Tuesday morning, the resounding consensus on social media was that he deserved the embarrassment.

Most film fans in the ‘80s got their first glimpse of John Cusack on the big screen as one of Anthony Michael Hall’s buddies who placed a bet that requires that their pal to secure a pair of Molly Ringwald’s panties in the John Hughes teen comedy “Sixteen Candles.” Hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Consider that his sister Joan was reduced to playing “Geek Girl” with an awkward brace around neck.
It was uphill from there as Cusack, with his ironically humorous takes on leading manhood, became one of the more in-demand male stars for the next two decades, working with such top-notch directors as John Sayles, Rob Reiner, Cameron Crowe, Stephen Frears, Spike Jonze, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick and Mike Newell. Somehow, Cusack has been under the radar when it comes to be nominated for major awards as a performer. But he has made considerable contributions...
