Explore Pewabic Pottery plus a county fair: 5 things to do in metro Detroit this weekend

The first weekend of July offers a variety of entertainment for metro Detroiters, including music, art, pottery, racing pigs, micro wrestling and a demolition derby. Also, enjoy carnival rides, a sea lion show, monster trucks and more at the Oakland County Fair. Experience free concerts and family-friendly events in Rochester Hills and Clinton Township this weekend and throughout the summer. Explore Pewabic pieces and demonstrations at Pewabic Pottery; and attend an art fair in the park in Royal Oak.

Here are some things to do for the weekend of July 5-8.

2024 Oakland County Fair

Enjoy 10 days of events and entertainment, including carnival rides; a petting zoo; Sea Lion Splash shows; master chain saw artist Ben Risney; racing pigs, Micro Wrestling Federation; demolition derby; figure eight races; Super Kicker Rodeo Production, ATR Monster Truck Show; and more.

Demolition derby will be one of the events at the 2024 Oakland County Fair that runs from July 5-14.

Free music concerts will feature performances by The Riflemen, Dakota Ray Parker, Davisburg Mountain Jubileers, Emily Pyscher, Tyler Baxter and Grant Reiff.

The fair will be open from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from July 5-14 at Springfield Oaks County Park, 12451 Andersonville Road in Davisburg. Admission is $15 per vehicle, which includes general admission for all passengers. Additional costs apply for carnival rides and certain events.

The Village of Rochester Hills Summer Music Series

The Village of Rochester Hills, an outdoor shopping and dining destination, is hosting a variety of free family-friendly events and musical performances throughout the summer.

This weekend, enjoy live music from 5-9 p.m. with Robyn Marriott on Friday, and the True Blue Band on Saturday. On Sunday, Sean Mischley will perform from 2-5 p.m.

The Village of Rochester Hills is located at 104 N. Adams Road in Rochester Hills.

Pewabic’s Summer Market 2024

More than 50 ceramic artists nationwide will showcase new Pewabic pieces and work at the open-air summer market in the courtyard at Pewabic through Aug. 31. The market will feature live music, food trucks, artists, and interactive activities for families on select Saturdays through Aug. 31.

This Saturday, demonstrations will include wheel-throwing techniques by Steven Kin and live music by Pinter Whitnick. Other Saturdays will feature hand-painting techniques and various workshops.

Pewabic, a National Historic Landmark pottery, is located at 10125 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit. The store and courtyard will be open during regular hours.

Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair

This juried fine art fair featuring more than 100 artists is sponsored by the Royal Oak Arts Council and Royal Oak Recreation. Set in a tree-lined park, the fair will offer entertainment and food along with art work available to purchase in various categories, including drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, collages, glass, metal, wood, jewelry, leather/fiber and mixed media.

Photography and more will be at the Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park in Royal Oak.

Proceeds from the art fair will provide scholarships for local youth and grants for local art-related organizations.

The fair will be open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park, 3398 W. Thirteen Mile Road in Royal Oak.

The Mall at Partridge Creek Summer Concerts

Enjoy live music for the whole family, including their beloved dogs at Summer Sounds through Labor Day with free pop, rock, jazz, country, R&B and oldies concerts.

This weekend, the American Ages Band will perform on Friday; Wax Radio on Saturday; and The Johnnies on Sunday.

Times are 5-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 3-6 p.m. Sundays and Labor Day at The Mall at Partridge Creek at 17420 Hall Road in Clinton Township.
