Toronto accident scene

I worked in the accident squad for several years early in my police career responding to hundreds of the small, personal tragedies that occurred every day on Toronto’s roads.

I came to dread radio calls for accidents at specific locations in the city. During the 50’s and early 60’s collisions at level train crossings snuffed out the lives of dozens of unwary or impatient drivers.

That’s me using my pocket knife to hack through the twisted wreckage of a dump truck to get to what was left of the driver’s cab. As it turned out I was wasting my time, the driver was killed on impact. In train vs vehicle arguments, the train always wins.
