Jai-Alai originated in the Basque Country of Northern Spain. Jai-Alai means "Merry Festival" in the Basque language, though in Basque they refer to the game as "pilota". Gameplay is similar to Racquetball but players use a large scoop called a pelota to catch and propel the ball.
