The Best Tinted SPFs Of Summer

For radiant coverage and broad-spectrum protection in one, it's a pigmented sunscreen you need. These are the ones that hit the mark.

By now, we’ve spoken about the importance of wearing face SPF quite enough: you know you need one, and it’s high time you found one you actually enjoy using (the best SPF is the one you’ll willingly wear every single day, after all).

But if you’re more of a low-maintenance make-up kind of person, a tinted moisturiser SPF may be just the thing for you. As you’ve probably gleaned, these clever hybrid formulas work as your sunscreen and your base, offering a lighter, more luminous finish than a foundation while offering just a touch of tone-unifying coverage.

I’ve long been a big fan of a tinted SPF, using one as my everyday base, coupled with Chanel’s Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream and Westman Atelier’s Liquid Super Loaded Illuminator, it’s my shortcut to dewy glass skin. And the really good news is, tinted SPF has come a long way this year: it wasn’t too long ago when the options were scarce, especially for skin tones at either end of the shade spectrum, with many brands lagging infuriatingly behind when it came to inclusivity (many still are, but you won't see those recommended here).

Now, with the arrival of a new school of sunscreen brands, led by the likes of Ultra Violette and Supergoop, there’s an SPF tint for every one of us, and many of them are so good, you’ll forget all about foundation. There is one thing to bear in mind when it comes to using a tinted SPF, though: make sure you’re still applying enough to obtain the protection you need: two finger’s worth of sunscreen is your rough guide, so this is no time for restraint.

Here, see the ones I – and the rest of team ELLE – have tried and approved of.

The Tinted SPFs To Wear All Summer

1

Ultra Violette Daydream Screen Tinted Veil

£38 at Space NK

Unsure where to start? This is the one. Buzzy sunscreen brand Ultra Violette hails from Australia: the country with the most stringent SPF certification process, so you know you’re getting protection you can trust.

This, the brand’s tinted option, comes in a proper range of fifteen shades, and simply makes skin look incredible: think dewy, but not greasy, and with enough coverage to mask blemishes and pigmentation. If you’re after more of a make-up look, don’t sleep on the brand’s most recent launches: the Queen Screen Bronzing and Illuminating Drops are a liquid bronzer and highlighter that cleverly don’t affect your sunscreen filters when applied atop an SPF.

2

Dr Sam's Flawless Gossamer Tint SPF50

Flawless Gossamer Tint SPF50

If you’re sensitive-skinned, consider a mineral SPF. I’ll admit, they aren’t always the most sensorial to use, but Dr. Sam Bunting’s offering ticks all the boxes, melting into skin without leaving a white veil or thick, claggy texture. In order to apply the correct amount, Dr. Bunting recommends applying two light layers, not forgetting your eyelids. The result is glowy, but not overly dewy, and the flattering colour (there are four shades) lasts all day without drying or caking.

If you're in the market for something to use beyond your face (think: neck and chest) the brand's untinted SPF moisturiser is ideal, too.

3

Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen

SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen

Everything in the Tower28 family is formulated especially for hyper-sensitive skin, with the National Eczema Association giving it their seal of approval. This tinted sunscreen comes in a wide range of shades, and leaves behind nothing but sheer, satiny colour.

Heliocare is a brand you’ll hear many skin experts recommending – particularly for its advanced face formulas that combine clever actives with broad-spectrum protection.

The brand offers a few tinted formulas, including a sheer bronzer option, but this is the tint to go for if you’re after a simple, light layer of colour. It comes in a small handful of shades, and is sheer enough to mean you can slap it on with (clean) hands and not go wrong.

5

Trinny London BFF Cream

Here’s one for the truly low-maintenance: Trinny Woodall has created a base product that covers, hydrates and protects in one. BFF Cream comes in five shades: the white cream contains encapsulated balls of pigment which, when massaged into the skin, reveal a true-to-you colour that tackles mild blemishes without the need for concealer.

6

Beauty Pie Luminous Mineral Skin Tint

Beauty Pie Luminous Mineral Skin Tint

Since I tried this Beauty Pie launch last month, it hasn’t left my make-up kit. If you like a super-dewy finish – think: glassy, not glittery – you will love this lightweight, mid-coverage winner. Plus, at jus £16.50 to Beauty Pie members, you’ll be able to apply with abandon (and, of course, you should when it comes to sunscreen).

Supergoop! Glow Screen SPF30

Supergoop! Glow Screen SPF30

Fanatically popular in the US, Supergoop’s star formula offers a light-reflecting glow, rather than a foundation-style tint. The more bronze-leaning shades do a brilliant job of enhancing a post-summer tan, while the Original shade works beautifully as a radiance-boosting make-up primer.

8

Colorescience Total Protection Face Shield Flex

Total Protection Face Shield Flex

Colorescience is a brand that specialises in mineral sun protection, so you shouldn’t be surprised to hear they make one of the best mineral tinted SPFs. This one comes in four flexible shades, and feels surprisingly light for a physical formula, blending seamlessly with skin to look completely natural.

If you’re wanting to counteract redness, consider the brand’s All Calm formula too: it knocks back red tones without leaving you looking grey or sickly.

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better SPF50

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better SPF50

For those you prefer more of a make-up finish, you really must try this cult classic. Worth every bit of praise it has received (and there has been a lot), this foundation-cream hybrid covers rosacea flares and bouts of breakouts without ever feeling heavy or looking too much. The broad-spectrum SPF is a bonus.
