Coco & Clair Clair’s online obsessions: Lana Del Rey and ocean soundscapes

The Extremely Online pop duo guide us through their favourite internet rabbit holes

Dazed Faves is the series where we talk all things online – that surreal meme account you’re obsessed with, weird conspiracy theory subreddits, ASMR YouTubes, or slime Instagrams.

Listening to Coco & Clair Clair’s sophomore album Sexy is like sitting in on a best friend sleepover. The Atlanta duo (real names Claire Toothill and Taylor Nave) met on Twitter in 2017, releasing their debut album Posh shortly after and amassing a niche online circle of fans with their dreamy take on Soundcloud rap and bedroom pop. Layering irony-steeped, internet-brained lyrics over airy, featherlight beats, Sexy sees Toothill and Nave crank up the ante by collaborating with the likes of Deto Black, Marjorie Sinclair and Porches, as well as production courtesy of rising New York indie darling The Dare.

“When we first began working on the album around the end of 2020 it was all about a return to where we started, going back to our roots and solidifying who Coco & Clair Clair are,” they say. “But our lives have changed so much since we began making music in 2014 and we ended up finding a lot of inspiration in that. We quickly realised that our ideas were bigger than ever before. It was time to let the world know that we’re here, we’re serious, and we’re ready to be your new favorite pop girls.”

Whether it’s rapping about syncing up periods on “Bad Lil Vibe” or dropping ridiculous pop culture one-liners on “Cherub” (“I’mma Jordin Sparks you/That’s right, no air”), Sexy is the sort of based listening experience that can only come from years of being constantly online. “Luckily, we’re old enough to remember a time when the world didn’t revolve around iPhones and apps, but we did grow up on the internet,” they agree. “Many of our pre-teen and teenage days were spent on chatrooms, MySpace, Tumblr, etc. We each met so many people through the internet, many of whom are still our closest friends to this day. And truthfully speaking, if it wasn’t for the internet our project may not even exist.”

FAVOURITE INSTAGRAM

Coco: This girlie is my current fave Instagram because everything about her life is *chef’s kiss*. She’s probably the only ‘influencer’ type of person I follow and actually care about. I saw her on my Explore page sometime this year with her gorgeous family and I instantly was like ‘yes!’. Apparently, she’s well known and has been around for a while, but I have no clue who she is or where she came from. I just love her vibes. Especially when she films herself trying food – the drama!

FAVOURITE TIKTOK

Coco & Clair Clair: We LOVE Rahul! We’re always sending each other his videos and trying to learn his dances. The energy is infectious. His choreography, his facial expressions, his captions… he’s so positive and is clearly having such a good time. He comes up with his own dance moves and uses a mix of old and new songs which is really cool, he doesn’t just do what’s trending on TikTok that week. Every now and then he’ll perform a song that he wrote and his lyrics are always so good, confidence boosting and cheeky sort of like ours. ‘Tonight is the night that I will show off all my confidence, oh I’m the man that has good common sense.’ We should collaborate with him on something… we at least need some dancing tips. He can shake his booty like no other!

FAVOURITE YOUTUBE

Clair Clair: I like having this play in the background while I’m reading a book or playing on my Nintendo Switch. It’s the perfect final touch to any vibe. I’ve tried other ambiance videos like fireplaces or starry nights, but this one is my favorite. I never really understood the appeal of beaches or beautiful views until recently. It probably goes without saying that spending so much time online and in front of screens has inspired a new craving for IRL beauty, so I know it’s a little bit interesting and counterproductive that my chosen cure is just a beach on a screen. But I love it! Hopefully, I’ll make it to a real beach soon.

FAVOURITE SONG

Clair Clair: This song does something to me, I can’t explain it but something happens to me when this song comes on. It never gets old, which is rare. Usually, I’ll listen to a song so much that I can’t return to it for a few years, but this song is a staple in any and every playlist that I make. The lyrics, the melodies, the instruments, the production, even the music video, it’s all just *mwah!* chef’s kiss. It’s everything you could want in a song and more. The way she changes her flow so many times, ah! I get lost in it… I’m getting emotional even thinking about it. It’s a masterpiece. It needs to be studied in schools.

FAVOURITE FILM

Coco: My favorite movie I’ve seen this year. Claire and I watched it together over the summer I think right after we finished the album, so we were on straight-up zoinked out of our minds’ chill mode for a week or two and were watching crazy-ass movies. My friend Daniel Goldhaber recommended it after I had watched The Audition (1999), which is gross as fuck, for the first time. When the movie ended I remember Claire just covering her mouth and both of our jaws dropping and I vowed to never watch it again. I’ve seen it three times since!
