Former Louisville football coach John L. Smith is still helping the Cardinals' program.
Now the head coach at Kentucky State, Smith has been working with U of L's current coaches on special teams strategy heading into the 2017 season, according to Cards head coach Bobby Petrino.
"We've relied a little bit on John L.," Petrino said Saturday when discussing his kicking game. "We travel up the road (to Frankfort) and meet with John L., a lot. He's always been one of the greatest special teams coaches in America, and he certainly showed that when he came to work for me at Arkansas. I mean, we were lighting it up. He's been very kind to us and been coaching them up."
Smith coached Louisville for five seasons from 1998-2002 and joined Arkansas' staff under Petrino, ultimately filling in as interim coach for the Razorbacks in 2012.
He took over Kentucky State's program before a successful start there this past season.
