While you’ll likely see many parade-watchers and party-goers wearing super sexy Pride outfits (think: dog masks, BDSM-inspired harnesses, and rainbow pasties), know that you don't have to be that extra unless you want to. But if you’re feeling so inclined, don’t be afraid to wear something you never would in your everyday life. If there’s ever a place to express yourself fully and freely, this is it.
Not only does your Pride outfit need to be stylish, but it needs to be practical too. Wear comfortable shoes, pack a bottle of water, and slather on a layer of sunscreen before you apply your body glitter, face gems, and temporary tattoos.
But wait—where does the term “Pride” come from?
Though the origins of the term Pride are less than exact, the word is often associated with LGBTQ+ activist Brenda Howard, the “Mother of Pride” and organizer of the first official pride parade in 1970. Over the years, the phrase caught on with other gay rights activists like Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, and Marsha P Johnson.
