As queer people (and as allies), there's never been a more important time to stand up for LGBTQ+ rights. While America has come a long way since the Stonewall Uprising of 1969—which, history lesson time, was a series of clashes between the NYPD and the patrons of The Stonewall Inn that's widely considered to have kick-started the LGBTQ+ rights movement here in the U.S.— we've still got a loooong way to go.

As of June 7th of this year, the ACLU has tracked over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills within the United States. These range from bans on transgender athletes to drag shows, gender-affirming care for minors, and restriction of rights for LGBTQ+ students and educators. Even more alarming, a nationwide survey by The Trevor Project found that 41% of LGBTQ+ youth considered attempting suicide just last year. And a study by the UCLA School of Law found that transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crime.

In response, the queer community will be showing up and showing out this Pride Month with parties, protests, and parades that are bigger, better, and gayer than ever before, which is precisely why we made this one-stop-shop of the best 2024 Pride outfits and brands from which to shop. From queer-owned clothing brands to limited-edition gay pride graphic tees, we've got everything you need to create the perfect Pride outfit this June.

So, you’re ready to celebrate Pride Month!

A few quick tips on how to choose a Pride outfit:

When it comes to choosing a Pride outfit, you can’t really go wrong. The key word here is pride, so pick an ensemble that feels true to your gender expression and sexual orientation. While you’ll likely see many parade-watchers and party-goers wearing super sexy Pride outfits (think: dog masks, BDSM-inspired harnesses, and rainbow pasties), know that you don't have to be that extra unless you want to. But if you’re feeling so inclined, don’t be afraid to wear something you never would in your everyday life. If there’s ever a place to express yourself fully and freely, this is it.

Not only does your Pride outfit need to be stylish, but it needs to be practical too. Wear comfortable shoes, pack a bottle of water, and slather on a layer of sunscreen before you apply your body glitter, face gems, and temporary tattoos.

But wait—where does the term “Pride” come from?

Though the origins of the term Pride are less than exact, the word is often associated with LGBTQ+ activist Brenda Howard, the “Mother of Pride” and organizer of the first official pride parade in 1970. Over the years, the phrase caught on with other gay rights activists like Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, and Marsha P Johnson.

What to expect (and remember) if you’re celebrating Pride:

The purpose of Pride Month is the celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and call attention to the human rights issues that queer people continue to face. From massive Pride parades to theme nights at your go-to gay club and parties at your local drag bar, there’s a Pride festivity for everyone. Remember, Pride Month is about much more than rainbow flags. It’s about honoring all those who paved the way for us to live openly as queer people— and to help pave the way for LGBTQ+ youth.

While allies are always welcome to participate in the fun, it’s important to keep the true meaning of Pride top of mind. Use your allyship to help create safe spaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community to explore their identity and express themselves freely and fully.
