These sheets somehow manage to get softer with each wash." Editor Olivia Truffaut-Wong has a similar stance, "they're the fanciest things I own!" she says.

With durable and moisture-wicking bamboo fabric, plus an oversized fit and gentle drape, it's no wonder we love 'em. Bonus: The fabric is made from premium viscose, which means it's durable and won't pill.

A great thing to note: Buffy's signature biodegradable and compostable fabric "requires significantly less water to produce than conventional cotton," per the brand's website, and its products are shipped in a recycled cardboard box. What to look for when shopping for the softest sheets.

    line break

First things first: Shopping for soft sheets is subjective, says Preeti Gopinath, associate professor and director of the textiles MFA program at Parsons School of Design in New York City. You may find the crisp, clean feel of percale to be the softest thing you've ever touched, or you may believe that breathable linen sheets are sent straight from the gods. It's all about personal preference! That said, these fabrics are generally thought of as the softest to sleep in, according to Gopinath:

    • Microfiber: Made up of synthetic fibers, this super tight weave feels buttery and is also budget-friendly. Heads up, though: These sheets can sometimes get hot and feel less "natural" than other options.
    • Cotton/Sateen: Sateen is a type of weave pattern where one thread going in one direction is floated over several threads going in the other direction. This creates a smooth, luxe feel (especially when paired with 100 percent cotton).
    • Flannel: The smooth brushed cotton in this fabric traps in air for all the warmth and coziness. But beware—sh*t can get hot.
    • Silk: All hail the fiber that literally comes from bugs (you heard me). It's pricey, but oh my god is it soft, smooth, shiny, and strong.

What's the best thread count to shop for sheets?

    line break

Okay, so, thread count is kiiiiinda not as major of a factor as you might think when it comes to softness. "Thread count" generally refers to the amount of yarn used to make your sheets, per square inch of fabric. But those metrics can be tricky to verify, especially since some manufacturers aren't 100 percent truthful about that part of their production process. That's not to say thread count is totally irrelevant (still peep the number), but you'll def wanna pay closer attention to material, weave, and reviews to really know what the sheets will feel like.

How do I avoid scratchy sheets?

    shape, rectangle

Scratchy sheets are the worst. That's why you're here, reading this story, duh. To avoid 'em, you've gotta do two things: shop smart, and then take good care of them.

    Shop Smart!

We already chatted about what fabrics make for soft sheets, so if you're looking for luxury, be sure to keep an eye out for those. You're also going to want to steer clear of certain lower-quality fabrics that are prone to pilling, like polyester or nylon. New sheets, no matter their fabric type, can often feel scratchy off the bat due to chemical coatings, so make sure to always give everything a good wash before putting them on your bed.

    Take Care!

Even high-quality sheets can start feeling rough if you don't take good care of them. Start by making sure you're washing and drying them properly, taking note of the care instructions on your set. No matter the care instructions, you should always be sure not to overstuff your washing machine or use more detergent or fabric softener than recommended. If the sheets don't rinse properly, things can get real crusty, real quick.
