Despite her record-breaking accomplishments and status as a breakout star in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark won't be making her way to the 2024 Paris Olympics. On Sunday, June 9, the 3-time U.S. basketball gold medalist revealed that she isn't playing for Team USA at the Olympic games.
Per The Huffington Post, Caitlin said, “I know it’s the most competitive team in the world and I know it could have gone either way. I’m excited for them. I’m going to be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics. It will be fun to watch them.” the Indiana Fever guard was then asked if she felt upset about the decision, to which she responded, “Honestly, no disappointment.”
“I think it just gives you something to work for. You know, that’s a dream. Hopefully one day I can be there,” she continued, sending well wishes to the team. “Hopefully in four years, when four years comes back around, I can be there.”
Team USA has won gold in the past seven Olympic Games, and it's on track to do so again this year. This year's 12-player roster includes Brittney Griner, Shakira Austin, and Jackie Young.
When asked if she'd be willing to step in and help the team if injuries arose, Caitlin clarified that while she's in good standing with the team and that it'd be a “great opportunity,” her main focus is on Indiana Fever. “The 12 they have selected are really great players so I think they’re in pretty good hands,” the athlete dished.
Last month, Caitlin was named the WNBA's Rookie of the Month, and she's racked up impressive accolades throughout her basketball career. She's currently the NCAA D1 all-time leading scorer, scored the most 3s in a game in NCAA tournament history, and received a James E. Sullivan Award in 2023. Love that for her!
