What to know about back-to-school resources, information

For families ready to start preparing for the 2024-25 school year, many area school districts have already started sharing school supply lists and information about free back-to-school events.

The first day of school is just weeks away for some area students, while other school districts return in mid-August.

Here's what to know ahead of the first day of school for Corpus Christi school districts, including upcoming community health and resource fairs:

Corpus Christi ISD

The first day of school for Corpus Christi ISD students is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12. The full school calendar is available online. School supply lists are also available online at https://www.ccisd.us/article/1631308.

LEAD First and Driscoll Children's Hospital are hosting a back-to-school health fair 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 27 at Miller High School.

The event will feature free back-to-school items and health services, including backpacks and school supplies while supplies last, health screenings, food bags donated by the Coastal Bend Food Bank, sports physicals, hearing and vision tests, diabetes tests, blood pressure check and fatty liver tissue screening.

Families should also bring their child's immunization record, proof of health insurance and a valid ID for the parent or guardian in order for children to receive immunizations and vaccinations.

The event is for any student of any age from any school. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Tuloso-Midway ISD

Tuloso-Midway ISD, which has one of the earliest start dates in the region, will welcome students back to the classroom Wednesday, July 17.

Ahead of the new school year on Tuesday, July 9, Tuloso-Midway ISD is holding a back-to-school health fair hosted by Nueces County Commissioner Robert Hernandez.

At the event from 4-6 p.m. at Tuloso-Midway High School's FEMA dome, attendees can access no-cost immunizations, athletic physicals, diabetes screenings and blood pressure checks. The event will also feature door prizes and giveaways.

Flour Bluff ISD

Flour Bluff ISD students return Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney is hosting a back-to-school health fair from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at Flour Bluff High School.

The event is open to community children and will feature free health resources, athletics physicals, diabetes screenings and blood pressure checks.

West Oso ISD

West Oso ISD returns for students Tuesday Aug. 13.

West Oso ISD shared school supply lists on Facebook last week.

West Oso ISD will also be one of the host sites for Nueces County's Operation Health and Wellness event scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 22-26 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 27 at West Oso Junior High School, Missions of Mercy and Calderon Nueces County Center in Robstown.

The county health and wellness fair is free. At the West Oso site, the event will feature immunizations and vaccinations, back-to-school physicals, diabetes screening, behavioral health resources, back-to-school physicals, women's exams and vaccinations and microchipping for dogs and cats.

Calallen ISD

Calallen ISD students return Thursday, Aug. 8.

Nueces County Commissioner Robert Hernandez already hosted a student health clinic at Calallen ISD in June.

However, there are still upcoming back-to-school and community health fairs scheduled to be held in nearby districts that are free and open to students from any school district, including Driscoll Children's Hospital and LEAD First's Happy Health fair scheduled Saturday, July 27 and Nueces County's Operation Health and Wellness scheduled for July 22-27 at Mission of Mercy for optometry services and West Oso Junior High School and Calderon Nueces County Center in Robstown for health services, immunizations and back-to-school physicals.

  • Nueces County Commissioner Robert Hernandez's Tuloso-Midway ISD back-to-school health fair is planned for 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 at Tuloso-Midway High School.
  • Corpus Christi Police Department's Operation Safe Return is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at American Bank Center. The event will include school supplies, immunizations, hair cut vouchers, dental education and sports physicals.
  • The Garcia Arts and Education Center's back-to-school event scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 will feature backpacks, as well as school supply packs, haircuts and immunizations for attendees who register online at https://www.tamucc.edu/education/departments/garcia-center/programs/back-to-school-event.php.
  • Happy Health back-to-school health fair is scheduled for Saturday, July 27 at Miller High School.
  • Nueces County Operation Health and Wellness is scheduled for July 22-27 with immunizations and back-to-school physicals and more at West Oso Junior High School and Calderon Nueces County Center in Robstown.
  • Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney is hosting a back-to-school health fair from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at Flour Bluff High School.
