Considering the misery it causes, atopic eczema doesn’t get the attention it deserves. But, as a review of guidelines by the American Academy of Dermatology points out, a wide range of effective topical treatments is available. The revised guidelines make strong recommendations for the use of moisturisers, calcineurin inhibitors, corticosteroids, Janus kinase inhibitors, and phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors. On the other hand, they strongly advise against the use of topical antimicrobials, antiseptics, and antihistamines (J Am Acad Dermatol doi:10.1016/j.jaad.2022.12.029).
