Liza Lou
(American, born 1969)
Liza Lou is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale sculptures and installations. Her seminal work Kitchen (1991–1996), is a 168-square-foot replica of a complete kitchen festooned with glass beads. “Here is this monument to women’s work, to the labor that is uncelebrated, to the mothers and grandmothers who baked pies, and cooked and sowed but yet are never thanked, the labor that is endless,” she explained of the work. Born in 1969 in New York, NY, she went on to attend the San Francisco Art Institute, where she became more interested in beads than in painting.
