From Publishers Weekly

Moore, a frequent guest on the Oprah show, helms a list of world class female physician coauthors. The book opens with the old news that womenÖs wellness has taken a backseat to menÖs, even though itÖs been 20 years since the government insisted that clinical trials include women. The few reliable, comprehensive guides to womenÖs health include most notably Our Bodies, Ourselves and The New Harvard Guide to WomenÖs Health, but this new resource is not one of them. It offers broad coverage, but insufficient straightforward information. Opening with the familiar discussion about why women are different and deserve appropriate care, the book covers minimal basic explanations and advice for maintaining health and understanding and recognizing symptoms of disease. In an effort to offer nonalarmist guidance, the coauthors downplay the severity of certain conditions, including cancer, liver disease and coronary artery disease. Twelve of 16 chapters, each presenting short overviews, sidebars, charts, illustrations, symptom checklists and advice for self-care, focus on an individual physiological system (hormones, breast health, heart, etc.). The message that informed patients receive better care is here, but symptom checklists are incomplete and explanations cursory at best. (May)

While I have 6 children and 17 grandchildren (so far), I really believed I knew all there was to know about good health, wellness & prevention. After perusing this comprehensive book, I realize that I wasn't even aware of how many issues I should have already addressed with my physicians! Perfectly direct, specific approaches to problems are given, including specific questions to ask. Even more importantly, Women's Health for Life gives the reader a balanced presentation of how to better communicate with your doctor. Our family has dealt with some serious medical issues. With this resource, I feel better prepared to offer educated, well-informed advice and direction.

How do I love this book? Let me count the ways (just a few, really...):
1) It recognizes that there ARE differences between men and women that matter for all aspects of health -- physical, mental, social, chemical, etc.
2) It has a fabulous section by decade on the kinds of issues many women in that decade face, with very practical and specific guidance -- what tests to have, what to expect, what you can do yourself, and where to seek guidance and assistance.
3) It recognizes that such things as weight issues, sleep issues, and menopause are huge, and offers the best available guidance on options in plain language for all -- not for "dummies"
4) It contains plentiful amounts of the 3 T's: tips (galore, for all medical/health issues women face), tests (what's needed at each age), and tasteful photos (important and appropriate)
5) It's straightforward about symptoms and provides guidance as to what to do next

This is a must-own for every household -- men will benefit as well!
Think Mother's day and graduation gifts as starters -- off to college, new job, new baby, or just having a resource for life, and you'll be thrilled with your choice!

Women of all ages should own this book. It is a quick reference tool that addresses the full spectrum of health issues related to women. The book is easy to use, written in language we laypersons can understand and it clearly outlines definitions, symptoms, risk factors and treatment options. I gave this book to my high school age daughter so she could look up any areas of concern she might be too embarrassed to ask either her doctor or me. I especially like the illustrations and the photos of real women - not just size zero runway models! Thank you to Dr. Donnica and the team of experts for compiling this comprehensive book for us.

A few weeks ago I bought Women's Health for Life for myself and another friend for Mother's day (my boys like to be told what I want for a present). It was terrific - thoughtfully put together, with a lot of information made easily available, good photography, and some surprising depth in the sections on specific ailments. Having just passed the half century mark, I found myself drawn into "hormones, fertility and menopause" in particular and was grateful to be well informed, without alarm. This is a very good piece of work and I wish I had something like it to refer to when I was younger!

I purchased this book not only for myself, but for my sister, sister in law and good friend. We are all of the age of health issues and this book, written by women FOR women, is right on target. I especially liked the layout of "What is it?" to "Do I have the symptoms?" to "Options." It will certainly be much easier to open up the dialogue to my doctor now that I know how to explain what I'm feeling and what to ask specifically about. This truly is a great reference book and guide for women, young to older. This will be my gift purchase to all my close friends and family this year.

This is just the kind of book I was looking for--a smart reference book for women that offers easy-to-follow and easy-to-comprehend advice for staying healthy through the decades. I like the snapshot-style approach that provides a well-organized way to find the answers you need. I also liked the fact that it's not too copy dense, but provides enough information to make it a worthwhile purchase. It's the kind of book I'll refer back to again and again--a modern-day "Our Bodies, Our Selves." I recommend this for your own book shelves, and as a gift.

This book is a great "first stop" for learning about women's health. The format is terrific and makes it easy to get the information you want. You can look things up by age and/or by topic so that you go straight to what you're looking for. There is a great balance of substance and quick facts. As a whole, we women tend to take care of others first and put off taking care of ourselves. This book is a fantastic way to check in about our bodies.

My friend sent me the link to this book, I picked it up the other day and found that she was right - it is loaded with lots of great advice I have never actually received from any doctor I have been to (for some reason?) I am going through some health issues and I found the book very informative and helpful. I am recommending it to all my girlfriends!

Amazingly useful information without all the drama and scaremongery that sadly other publications throw at us. A super reference book for all ages.

Good book for reference but not as detailed as I would have liked on some subjects, surprised it covers many medical conditions, not just 'female' ones.
