There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The connections to my existing components were easy through the included OneConnect Mini Box and I had no real problem with wire lengths though I can see the gripes about the length of the power cord. An extra foot would have made it just a little easier to plug in to the power strip behind the TV.
The initial set up was really easy. The TV walks you through the online set up and the software update occurred automatically. Setting up the remote to control your other components (cable box and DVD player) was a breeze. The picture on this TV is phenomenal. I played with the settings based on some professional reviews I saw online, but I didn't see a ton of difference versus the default settings. Sports look unreal on this set and HD content is phenomenal. I tried a 4k movie on it, but didn't see a huge difference between 1080p. I'll have to compare them A/B and see how they look. I haven't used the 3d because the TV didn't come with glasses (It should have for the price)
The smart TV function is a breeze to use. My previous TV was not "Smart" so we had streaming Netflix and Amazon through the DVD player. That was easy enough that my young son could do it, but this is even easier. The "smart" functions appear when you turn on the TV and accessing the menu comes with the touch of a button. I won't use 75 percent of it, but having Amazon, Netflix and Youtube easily accessible is great.
I upgraded from a 46 inch Samsung I bought about 8 years ago (The model with the red bezel) and I have to say, I miss the solid looking frame around the TV. it's so noticeable that the new 60 inch doesn't really look any bigger on the shelf than the old 46 inch did. That's a preference thing though as I'm sure many love the small frame. I will say it IS cool that the whole front panel is basically screen as it gives you an immersed feeling. I'm not overly wild about the stand as the TV moves a little while attached to it. It's not enough to make me worry it's going to fall over, but enough that it makes me a little queasy when I move it to get to the back.
The remote is a touch confusing with both the pointer feature and regular remote features. What it means is you have two "enter" buttons (one with the pointer and one with the regular motion buttons) I'm sure I'll get used to it, but for a remote that is supposed to make life easier, it adds an extra element. The pointer is cool, but a little gimmicky.
I have only two real gripes so far. 1st, the upconvert on older movies had some issues. I put on an old movie off Netflix and it was blurred and there was a lot of noise in the picture. It's possible it has something to do with my wifi connection as it seemed to resolve itself at times.
The only other gripe I have may be something I'm doing wrong though I'm pretty handy with this stuff and could not figure out the issue. When I put the TV on and connected through the cable box, the menu accessible from the remote included the Comcast channel guide as well as a tab to access my DVR. Later, after I had turned the TV off for a while and then turned it back on, the tabs for guide and DVR were gone. I could not for the life of me figure out why they were no longer there. I tried everything I could including re-running all the initial set ups and I still could not find it. Then about 5 minutes before I was going to give up, it appeared again with seemingly no rhyme or reason. It's possible I did something differently that time, but if I did, I have no idea what it was. I'll keep playing with it and update if I figure it out.
BOTTOM LINE: This is a great TV. A touch more expensive than other 60 inchers out there, but for the extra $400 I spent over the Sony I looked at, this has so many more features. UPDATE: The guide issue seems ot have resolved itself and the Super Bowl looked phenomenal on this thing so I upped my review from 4 to 5 stars.
This set replaced a two year old Sony XBR (55 inch) that I'm moving to a bedroom. The Sony is replacing a seven year old Panasonic Plasma (42 inches) that will become a game monitor in another bedroom. It's sort of like musical chairs with TV sets.
Unboxing
Seemed to go OK, the nice guys from Pilot delivered the TV, unboxed it, attached the stand, and turned it on to make sure it worked. They were happy to move it to my entertainment center but I had some rewiring to do so I did that myself with some help. No, it's not all that heavy but it's very awkward to lift and move. It really is a two person job.
Setup
Wow, has this ever gotten easier over the years. I plugged the cable from my AVR into the OneConnect box and the supplied OneConnect cable from the box to the TV. I have all of my peripherals connected to my AVR so the only connection to the TV is from the AVR to one of the HDMI ports via the OneConnect box. Side note on the box - some people are complaining about it but I think it's a great idea. I have the box hidden behind the stand but it's easily accessible if I want to plug something in - like a USB device; it sure beats trying to connect something to the back of the TV.
After I had everything connected I powered on the TV and followed the prompts. I always hold my breath when something new tries to connect to my WiFi but there weren't any hiccups. By the way, you're going to be forced to use the rather odd remote that comes with this TV. I got fond of it after I adjusted to it - moving the cursor around by pointing rather than using some clunky up/down/right/left arrow (which you can still do) was much easier.
Of course, after I answered everything I wasn't getting a signal and all I had was snow. After fiddling with my AVR and changing the source input on the Samsung I got a crystal clear cable signal. And, it was bright enough to be seen from outer space. So, I dove into the settings because I figured the default was "dynamic" which is what you're usually seeing on the demo models. But, nope - it was set to "standard". Brightness aside (see below) I immediately noticed a much sharper picture. My AVR has an upscale feature like most do, but it only upscales sources other than HDMI so it had no affect on my sometimes not so great cable signal. But, the Samsung upscales everything that comes into it so even if I'm sending a 1080 signal from cable to the TV it's going to upscale it to 4K and it shows.
Settings
I haven't made too many changes but I did get some recommended picture settings from rtings.com and one day I'll play around with them. I did find that the first evening the picture faded significantly. It was still crisp but it dimmed. I seemed to remember something about an automatic dimmer and that was the problem. If you run into this problem and find it as annoying as I did, it's called Eco-Sensor. At first I turned it off but that made the picture too bright in a dark room so I just changed the minimum brightness level and that seems to be working OK. You have complete access to more settings that you've ever dreamed about. The E-manual (it shows up on your TV or you can look at it online or download it to your PC) explains everything so most of us can understand it.
The user interface for accessing apps, games, streaming services, etc is outstanding. Press one button on the remote and everything is shown on the bottom of the screen. Move the pointer (or use the arrows) to what you want and select it. It's that easy. Obviously the first time you go somewhere you're going to be asked to sign-in but after that the entire process is simple and fast. I got into Netflix faster than I get in on my tablet.
Speaking of my tablet (a Samsung Galaxy Tab S), I was playing around and I mirrored the screen to the TV by simply selecting the icon on my tablet and confirming the connection on the TV. The video wasn't as crisp as HD cable but it was readable. I also connected my desktop PC (a Windows 7 system) to the TV. I was easily able to navigate through my folders and start up a slideshow of pictures. I also used the Samsung's web browser without any problems. No, it's not as full featured as something like Chrome but handy for looking something up.
Because I have a Harmony remote, cable, and everything is connected to my AVR I don't use the Samsung remote very much. But, I do use it when I'm streaming music or video directly to the TV, e.g., NetFlix. Like I said before, the pointer function is pretty easy to use for selecting things. You'll also notice that there aren't any numbers on the remote. But, press Menu/123 and they show up on the TV screen. That's cute but I'm not sure I'd want to use that all the time to do things like change the TV channel. A universal remote (like the Harmony) would solve this problem but it would be nice if Samsung also included the old-style remote like they do with some of their higher end models.
Overall - I'm happy with my decision. Attractive TV that has more features than I'll ever use (like 3-D). It was easy to set-up, easy to use, and a great picture.
