Opera storica dello studio Ghibli, tanto da diventare il logo stesso dell'azienda.
La semplicità della trama e la bellezza delle animazioni lo rendono facilissimo da seguire anche dai più piccoli.
Racconto fiabesco che tratta di due sorelle(Mei e Satsuki), che trasferitesi in un altra città insieme al padre, per essere più vicine alla madre ricoverata in ospedale, si imbattono in vari spiriti buoni con i quali vivere le loro avventure.
Il film ha una animazione eccezionale, ricordando che è completamente fatta a mano, i due DVD di questa edizione contengono oltre al film pochi extra: Trailer - Spot - Video Promozionali e per chi è appassionato di animazione tutto lo storyboard del film.
Un titolo immancabile, veramente per tutti, sicuramente lo rivedrete molte volte e vi affezionerete ad ogni personaggio.

Mein Nachbar Totoro ist der wohl bedeutendeste und populärste Film von Hayao Miyazaki überhaupt, zumindest in Japan. Selbst das Firmenlogo schmückt die Figur aus dem Anime und wird auch kurz vor beginn jedes Films aus diesem Studio kurz eingeblendet. Dennoch hätte dieser es beinahe gar nicht erst ins Kino oder gar in den Produktionsraum geschafft da Hayao Miyazaki unter enormen Druck stand und an die Erfolge seiner beiden bisherigen Filme anknüpfen wollte. Zudem war er damals noch nicht finanziell unabhängig und musste erst bei seinem Geldgeber vom Filmverlag um Erlaubnis bitten mit der Produktion beginnen zu können. Dies gestaltete sich jedoch als schwierig da der Anime zunächst abgelehnt wurde. Erst als Isao Takahata zur gleichen Zeit mit der Produktion an seinem wohl bekanntesten Werk "Die letzten Glühwürmchen" beginnen wollte, legte Miyazakis Produzent die Filmskripte diesmal einfach gemeinsam dem Geldgeber vor mit der Hoffnung somit endlich ein O.K. zu bekommen. Zunächst winkte der Gläubiger wieder ab doch dann entschloss er sich zumindest Isao Takahatas Film zu unterstützen und für Mein Nachbat Totoro wurde im letzten Moment jemand anderes gefunden, somit musste parallel gearbeitet und zwei Verleger zufrieden gestellt werden. Aus diesem Grund sind beispielsweise in Japan und auch in Deutschland jene Filme nicht bei ein und dem selben Verleiher auf DVD erschienen. Jedoch haben die Schwierigkeiten nichts an dem Erfolg geändert und bis heute sind die Figuren aus dem Anime wie der Katzenbus und Totoro selbst beliebte und gut verkaufe Fanartikel.

Im Film ziehen die beiden Mädchen Satsuki und Mei zusammen mit ihrem Vater in ein schönes aber etwas verwahrlostes Haus auf dem Land. Dort kann sich ihr Vater der an einer Universität arbeitet in Ruhe seinen Studien widmen, zudem wohnen sie jetzt näher an ihrer Mutter die in einem Sanatorium liegt und sich von einer schweren Krankheit erholt. Die neue Umgebung soll jedoch hauptsächlich ihre Heilungschancen nach dem Klinikaufenthalt verbessern. Beim stöben in dem neuem zu Hause entdecken die beiden Mädchen kleine schwarze Tierchen an der Wand die wie Rußmännchen aussehen und extrem scheu sind. Versucht man allerdings einen von denen zu fangen bekommt man bei der Berührung ganz schwarze Hände. Eine ältere Bäuerin die in der Nachbarschaft wohnt und in der Vergangenheit gelegentlich nach dem Haus geschaut hat damit es nicht verfällt, erzählt ihnen das es sich um Wesen handelt die nur Kinder sehen können und ungern mit Menschen zusammen wohnen. Nach einiger Zeit während Satsuki in der neuen Schule ist beschließt ihre kleinere Schwester die nähere Umgebung zu erkunden und trifft dabei den ersten Totoro. Er hat lange spitze Ohren, keine erkennbare Nase und weißes Fell und ist gerade dabei mit einem zweiten Totoro der etwas größer ist und bläuliches Füll trägt, Eicheln fürs Mittagessen zu sammeln. Doch leider werden sie dabei von der kleinen Mei gestört und müssen nun die Flucht antreten da sie schon die Verfolgung aufgenommen hat. Es gelingt ihr sogar dem einen ins Unterholz zu folgen und landet dabei in einer Höhle wo ein großer Totoro seinen Mittagsschlaf hält. Dieser ist deutlich größer wie ein Mensch und hat etwa die Ähnlichkeit mit einem Bär und einer Eule, später wird er der beste Freund der beiden Mädchen im Film werden.

Mein Nachbar Totoro gilt als berühmtester Film von Hayao Miyazaki und gehört zu denen die ich mir am liebsten anschaue und das völlig zurecht. Er kömmt völlig ohne Action aus und ist so herrlich unbeschwert, lediglich die Stelle als sich der Zustand der Mutter im Sanatorium verschlechtert steigert ein wenig die Anspannung für einen Moment. Beim zusehen kann man jedoch allgemein wunderbar abschalten. Die Musik von Joe Hisaishi gefällt vor von allen Filmen zu denen er den Soundtrack komponiert hat am besten und ist auch ein Grund dafür warum man beim zuschauen das Ende nicht herbeisehnt. Im gleichen Jahrzehnt in dem auch Mein Nachbar Totoro erschienen ist, sind in Japan viele hochwertige Anime Serien und Filme entstanden da in den 80ern sehr bekannte Studios gegründet worden sind, darunter auch Ghibli die sich auf Animes in Spielfilmlänge spezialisiert haben. Jedoch ist dieser Trend an uns hier in Deutschland fast völlig vorbeigegangen. Zumindest bei diesem Anime kann man das Versäumte nach fast 20 Jahren endlich nachholen.

Bei der DVD ist die Schärfe des Bilds meist die erste auffällige Eigenschaft. Ein optimales Bild soll scharf sein und möglichst viele Details bieten. Es gibt jedoch viele Ursachen, warum ein Bild nicht die optimale Schärfe hat. Einer ist beispielsweise, dass aus Kostengründen einfach eine vorhandene NTSC-Fassung in eine PAL-Version "umgerechnet" wird wie bei Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland und vor allem Only Yesterday. Da NTSC, was in Japan Standart ist, eine geringere Auflösung als das deutsche PAL besitzt, werden bei der Umwandlung Informationen zum Bild hinzugerechnet, die eigentlich gar nicht vorhanden sind. Dadurch wird das Bild unscharf. Jedoch scheint UFA bei dieser DVD jene Umwandlungsmethode glücklicher Weise nicht angewendet zu haben und wenn doch dann sehr unauffällig und somit ein gestochen scharfes Bild erzeugt dem man das hohe Alter nicht sofort ansieht.

Auf der zweiten DVD befinden sich neben den Storybords zum Film, noch ein kurzes Making of mit etwa 15 min. Länge und das Opening & Ending des Films (4:05 min.) ohne die japanischen Schriftzeichen sowie noch die originalen Kinotrailer und andere interessante Sachen. Da es allgemein schwierig ist Videoinformationen aus dem Ghibli Studio zu bekommen ist das hier schon eine ganze Menge. Da kann man verschmerzen das die 20 min. lange "Tour durch das Studio Ghibli" welche auf der japanischen Auflage enthalten ist nicht mitübernommen wurde oder werden konnte. Das Motiv für die DVD Hülle ist exzellent ausgewählt worden und einzigartig, darüber hinaus besitzt die Limitierte Auflage neben den Sammelkarten der Standart-Edition noch ein riesiges Poster, einen sehr schön gestalteten Kalender für 2008 sowie ein Kartenbuch mit über 90 Blättern. Auch wenn Mein Nachbar Totoro der beliebteste und bekannteste Anime von Hayao Miyazaki ist, hoffe ich inständig das er seinen besten Film noch nicht gedreht hat.
