On the plus side, I found it to be an extremely easy read and I completed it over the course of two evenings. I definitely thought that the plot was a bit lacking...and that the profusion of endearments back and forth between Lizzy and Darcy were a bit much even for the most hard-core romance novel fan (which I am not...I found it quite annoying after awhile). With that said, as a P&P fan I like the characters and I am intrigued by P&P related novels which satisfy the curiosity of "what might have happened next" or "what if things had been different". I wouldn't say this is a great book by any stretch, but I did purchase the next book in the series after finishing....so it wasn't that bad either.
The writer is clear about the fact that this book is based on the 2005 movie & not the novel, so for those people who go into reading this expecting it to in any way compare to the original will be greatly disappointed. Some reviewers compared it to a Harlequin Romance Novel, and honestly I may have liked it more if it were because at least I would have had a better idea of what to expect.
All in all, I give this book 4 stars (instead of 3, which was my initial inclination) because I do care enough about the story to continue reading despite its faults.
I started the first volume with some doubt but was quickly drawn in and entranced. She is not Austen, but she has further developed the characters to where one thinks they may have gone had Austen revisited their story.
There are 5 main hooks on Elizabeth and Darcy, with 2 pre-wedding volumes. Then there is a Christmas through the years sort of book. After that there is book on Georgiana and one on Darcy’s uncle, who spent ma y years as a physician in India.
Don’t be a snob; just try one. The author spins lovely, believable stories as she further draws the two main characters and the remarkable relationship they have for their time in history.
I seldom write reviews and never fawn. I fell I love with the characters all over again and recommend you try one of the books. I recommend reading them in order, but I actually found the two-volume prequel after I’d read the main five. No matter.
These are enjoyable reads and I wish I weren’t at the end of the books. Thank you, Sharon Lathen.
First of all, it is a love story of two young people who never were really in love with anyone else: second of all, it brings out the best of what two different personalities has to offer to better their partners; thirdly, I think the sexual experience that they shared was through experimentation and lust for each other. I think Sharon Lathan explained that quite well. This is pretty much of what is in today's world.
Imagine going from being relatively middle class to upper class and having to adjust to living with the rich. That is what Lizzy basically had to do & she did it gracefully with her charming, witty, and well versed self charming the upper crust!
She was well liked and even by the villian Orman that caused so much havoc in this novel.
It was well written explaining what I have stated and it really wasn't a bad read. Thanks and I will continue to re-read her next novels so I can write reviews for them.
