The New York Times bestselling author of Shadow Warriors investigates the tragedy of Benghazi to answer the questions: what really happened—and why?

We know the Obama administration’s story, of a demonstration caused by an Internet movie that went out of control. But what actually did happen in Benghazi on the night of September 11, 2012?

Dark Forces is the story of clandestine arms deliveries by the United States and its allies to Libya that wound up in the hands of Islamist guerrillas. It’s a story of a romantic diplomat, in love with the Middle East and with a mystical version of Islam. It’s a story of bald-faced lies, heroic acts, and the deepest corruption.

But Dark Forces is not only a retelling of events. It puts those events into the larger context of Obama administration policy toward the Middle East. It will examine the administration’s record of systematically supporting Muslim Brotherhood and extremist groups in their efforts to overthrow pro-U.S. autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya.

It shows how President Obama’s obsessive outreach to the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran led the Iranian regime to dismiss him as a weak, ineffective leader who would not fight back. And it shows why and how this deadly combination cost the lives of four Americans on Sept. 11, 2012.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

On September 11, 2012, the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, a heavily armed group attacked the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, killing U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and another diplomat. Timmerman argues that the attack was the result of a clandestine Obama administration deal to sell arms to Libyan rebels. Timmerman explores the administration’s Middle East policy, including its support for the Arab Spring effort to bring democracy to intransigent regimes. He contends that the administration threw its support behind the Muslim Brotherhood and others to overthrow pro-U.S. regimes in Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt. He contends that Obama and Stevens were too naive in believing their diplomatic efforts could bring peaceful transition in Libya. Written as a fast-paced thriller, Timmerman’s account, containing charges of a cover-up, is certain to continue the controversy and conspiracy theories about the attack, which the Obama administration first reported as a riot in reaction to an Internet movie offensive to Muslims. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“This book is an excellent read. In fascinating detail, it explores avenues and answers questions that have not previously been pursued. Now the question is: will the Obama administration and Congress finally provide answers through a select committee on Benghazi?” — Lieutenant Colonel DENNIS B. HANEY, USAF (Ret.)

My first Middle East reporting trip took me to Beirut in July 1982, and I've been going back ever since. I've lived in Egypt and Lebanon, have worked with freedom fighters in Iran and Iraq, and been held hostage by Muslim terrorists in a war zone. All of that is the subject of my latest book, And the Rest Is History.

My forthcoming book, Raising Olives in Provence, is a change of pace, a laugh-out-loud account of the south of France from someone who has gotten to know the region and its people intimately over the past twenty years.

I had purchased from Amazon 'DARK FORCES, THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN BENGHAZI" BY Kenneth R. Timmerman. I was especially interested in the Benghazi story (murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Ty Woods, Glen Doherty). I had purchased the book previously, 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi. When the movie, 13 Hours, was released on January 16, I went to see the movie. The book, 13 Hours, was very intriguing, and I was very impressed that the movie was very, very, close to the book in details. I also bought the book called "Dark Forces, The truth about What Happend in Benghazi". To Quote Colonel Richard Brauer Jr, USAF (Ret); founder, Special Operations Speaks on the book cover, ".Ken Timmerman's superbly researched Dark Forces is a brilliant expose of what actually happened in Benghazi before, during and after the fateful night of September 11, 2012. Packed with new and previously undisclosed information, it asks all the right questions and provides answers to some that have yet to be asked. If you want to know what the Obama administration does not want you to know about Benghazi, then Dark Forces is a must read." I have to tell you, the facts from how we got to Libya in the first place, how we tinkered with the politics of Quadaffi, which brought his demise, how we are tinkering with the politics of Syria, how weapons from Libya were "lost, stolen, hidden, sold, transferred etc." and have continued to show up on the black market was just mind boggling. But the thing that kept disgusting me was how President Obama and Hillary Clinton fabricated such stories to shadow their involvement in the whole affair because it would interfere with the "2012 elections" and spoil their image that they were presenting to the American public. The story of "Extortion 17" the SEAL Team group who captured and killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011, and who were shot down and killed by the Taliban in August 2011. A story that chilled me to the bones. I want to highly recommend that you read this book Dark Forces before you decide on the candidates for the next election. It is so informative, it will change your whole thinking about politics, how "Dark Forces" are definetely at work trying to change our way of life in "our America". I watched Sean Smith's mom on Fox TV and Yahoo, asking "Why? Why? Why won't anyone tell me what happened to my son in Benghazi?" I identified with her because, as a mom, I would have been asking the same question if it had been my son or my grandson. This book will answer the question, "Why?"

Ken Timmerman has done it again. Timmerman researches his subject matter in great detail and then writes his books. He names names and appears to go to great lengths to verify his sources. He lays out his subject matter in an easy to follow chronological order. As a person who has spent numerous years working in the middle east, I can attest to the tenacity of the Iranian Mullahs and their Quds Force operatives described by Timmerman in this book. It is an informative read for the average individual and an exciting read for those hungry for information about what led up to the Benghazi fiasco. This, and Libya, are undoubtedly examples of some of the absolute worst decisions ever made by then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and reinforced by Undersecretary Patrick Kennedy and Charlene Lamb. Having been involved with the State Department on several projects, I can honestly say the upper echelon is more interested in playing politics, rewriting facts to fit their agendas, and then scapegoating those who bring forth the truth. While we may never know 100% of the ground truth of the events leading up to, and culminating in the Benghazi fiasco, Ken Timmerman's book comes as close as any written so far, and most likely to close to the truth for those in the State Department who have spent great treasure to cover up their failures, protect Hillary Clinton's failure as Secretary of State and the Obama Administrations overall failure of a middle east foreign policy. I recommend this book.

UPDATE 3/3

The State Department finally obeyed the order to release the emails and to nobody's surprise from the very first notice of the attacks it was clear that they were terrorist initiated . Hillary, Obama, Powers and the gang all knew the facts. And yes , despite the lies to the contrary Hillary and Obama talked that evening. There's also emails indicating they wanted to manage the story , to get time to form the conspiracy to blame the movie for the terrorist attack and to arrest and jail the movie maker.

What Hillary must have realized is that there was a vast trove of emails out there warning of an attack and begging for more protection, which she and Obama denied. There were laws knowingly violated which required better protection of our personnel.

Timmerman has done the research that simply dismembers the many accounts offered by Obama, Hillary and their useful idiot followers.

By far the best book on the subject both in its view of the events but equally important the leadup to the even, the significance of Obama's policies in destabilizing the region and the long term consequences.

Anybody with even a partially open mind understands that Obama and Hillary not only lied about the event but undertook a massive campaign of disinfomation including the "movie caused the attack" story.

Timmerman unravels a far more damaging story that reaches across the region. The connection between Obama's actions in fermenting the Arab Spring and the loss of the helicopter filled with Seals in Afghanistan.... including many who were a part of the bin Laden mission.

As Obama continues to refuse to use the words Muslim and terrorist in the same sentence Americans are seeing a vastly different picture on TV as large scale butchering of prisoners is a part of the terrorist's campaign to form a new Caliphate.

Obama continues to silence Petreaus with threats of felony prosecution for sharing classified information with his biographer , something that Obama insiders do every day.

If there is one good thing that's happened it is that Obama's lies are so transparent that he is protected by a diminishing number of reporters and operatives.

This book starts out great but it becomes tough to follow. You have to know the different types of weapons and players, most people don't know. The middle eastern ones are particularly tough to follow.
It seems to me he gets a little too detailed and unnecessarily so. Maybe it was necessary to prove the cover up.
