The concept of Identity Crisis came into usage in the 1940s and it has continued to dominate the cultural zeitgeist ever since. In his exploration of the historical origins of this development, Frank Furedi argues that the principal driver of the crisis of identity was and continues to be the conflict surrounding the socialisation of young people. In turn, the politicisation of this conflict provides a terrain on which the Culture Wars and the politicisation of identity can flourish. Through exploring the interaction between the problems of socialisation and identity, this study offers a unique account of the origins and rise of the Culture Wars. - The first historical sociological study of changing relation between the crisis of identity and the politicisation of culture - Reinterprets the Culture Wars as an outcome of conflicting orientations towards the question of socialisation

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I had read some of Frank Furedi's books before, and had expected this to be thought-provoking. But in fact it is more important than that. It is an essential analysis of many of the current ills of western culture that sets them in a long-term framework. It is a big mistake to think that the deterioration in morality and rationality over the last 20 years is limited to that time frame. Furedi's writing is clear, insightful and convincing.

Racism, homophobia, misogyny may have declined but are still with us. The fight against them remains and people suffer oppression because of them. Now.
Furedi has moved from outside left to inside right. That involves ignoring the current reality of impacts of people leading their lives to feeding rightwing dogma and providing succour to their wedge political objectives.
