About South Kona Coast
Hot and sunny, the South Kona Coast is known for it's dry weather and gorgeous beaches and surf. With an environment catering to sandy days in the sun, and fun nights on the town, South Koan Coast is a true visitor destination different than the rest of the island.
See & Do
In times of yore, those in trouble — women, thieves, and escaped prisoners trying to evade capture — could find safe haven within the walls of this sacred burial ground, wherein lie the remains of Keawe, forefather of the legendary King Kamehameha I. Today, Pu`uhonua and some 180 acres of royal koi ponds, temple bases, and village sites surrounding it are protected by the National Park Service.
Eat
Serving three meals a day, volcano-themed Lava Rock Café is where locals refuel. Breakfast includes traditional egg dishes and the Big Island's own Loco Moco, a heap of rice with a hamburger patty and fried egg, all doused with gravy. Lunch consists of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. There's also a plate lunch option — choose up to three meats to accompany rice and a salad. Dinner is a global experience — the menu includes Asian specialties, Mexican fajitas, Italian pastas, and American grilled steaks.
Party
"For beer lovers, by beer lovers" is the slogan at Humpy's Alehouse where a huge array of beers on tap and really good bar food make for happy days and fun filled nightlife. Humpy's is the new spot in Kailua Kona for live music and nighttime entertainment. It's a popular hangout with both locals and visitors alike so you'll get the best of both worlds.
Stay
The South Kona Coast is home to the highest concentration of hotels on the island, both small scale and big resorts. Down the coast from here is the elaborate Hilton Waikoloa Village, and right in the area are smaller scale hotels such as the King Kamehameha Hotel, and the Royal Kona Resort. The Sheraton Keahou Bay and Uncle Billiy's are also in the immediate area.
Shop
Over forty vendors gather Wednesdays through Sundays from 7 am. to 4 p.m. at the Kona Farmers Market. Located on Alii Drive in the heart of Kailua Kona, the Kona Farmers and Crafts Market is a must see while on the Big Island of Hawaii. Check out the huge selection of locally grown produce, flowers, hand-made arts and crafts, Kona coffee and and many more local items in the outdoor market.
