These are networks devoted to a specific geographic area or language. Often they provide the best way for you to meet or chat with people from those areas. Argentina: SurNet

The first really large local network. It’s made up of servers that used to be the Australian part of the Undernet.

Brazil: BrasNET

Currently the largest local Brazilian network, this network has emerged the clear favourite among Brazilian users,

Brazil: BrasIRC

Another large Brazilian network. Note that this is not the only network calling itself BrasIRC, but is by far the largest of them.

Brazil: RedeBrasil

A smaller Brazilian network with the name of RedeBrasil.

Bulgaria: UniBG

Started 1996, now a major network.

Germany: BlafaselNet

A small network evolved from a single channel named #blafasel. Of course you have to be German to understand the humour behind it. Populated mainly by IRC veterans. Locations: Germany

Greece: GRnet

Started 1996. Some foreign servers serving expatriates too.

Indonesia: Indonet

Poorly maintained but fairly popular.

Italy: IRCity

IRCity, fornerly known as FASTnet, is the first lasting attempt to form an all-Italian network. Started 1997. Locations: Italy

Started 1997.

Pakistan

A very small single server from Cyber Internet Services

A very small single server run by CompuNet Online.

Philippines

A very small single server run by a large local ISP, Sky Internet

Portugal: PTnet

One of the largest networks in the world.

Small network, better known for the public release of its server and Services code.

Russia/Former Soviet Union: RusNet

RusNet serves the Russian-speaking community with servers spread throughout the former Soviet Union and a few more outside it.

South Africa: ZAnet.org

Originally known as Differnet, ZAnet is probably the oldest existing local network. A split in October 2000 resulted in the formation of ZAnet.net

After a turbulent early history and changing a number of names, this local network has emerged as a truly major regional network. Also one of the largest nets in the world.
