A 12-year-old boy in Michigan was killed after crashing head-on into his brother while both were riding dirt bikes, according to authorities.

It happened Monday around 5 p.m.

Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies said the two boys were riding on the trail along the powerline in opposite directions.

They crashed head-on while trying to negotiate a curve, according to the sheriff’s office.

Both of the boys were transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City by ambulance.

The 12-year-old died from his injuries, authorities said.

His brother, 14, sustained injuries in the crash, but is said to be in stable condition.

A preliminary investigation does not indicate that excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Both boys were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
