MASON COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- One person died Tuesday in what the Mason County Sheriff's Office described as a "probable drowning" at Ludington State Park.

At 1:49 p.m. Tuesday, first responders were notified of a person "struggling in the water" in Lake Michigan, Sheriff Kim Cole said in a statement.

"Several persons entered the water in an effort to assist the subject, however, by the time he was reached he had slipped under the surface," Sheriff Cole said. "Those citizens who responded were able to locate the victim under the surface and pull him to a raft, and then to shore where CPR was started."

Sheriff Cole said the person was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital.

The person's name has been withheld pending the notification of family members.
