CFL team has rights to Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin and Johnny Manziel

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats could have the best QB depth chart in the CFL if it was able to convince three former NFL quarterbacks to cross the northern border. Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin, and Johnny Manziel’s CFL rights are all owned by the Tiger-Cats. Talk about some top notch rights squatting.

Of course, Kaepernick and RG III are trying to latch on to an NFL team, and it is very unlikely they head to the CFL. Manziel has been out of the public eye even though he says he is trying to make a return. There is very little chance even one of these quarterbacks makes their way to America’s hat to play football.

It’s a nice conversation, but no one is going to the CFL to rehab their image or showcase their skills for an NFL team. Normally it works the other way around. Players who are undrafted head north to try and showcase their abilities to hopefully get picked up by an NFL team. Cameron Wake is the top example.

That doesn’t mean players can’t go back and forth. Doug Flutie spent some time in the NFL before becoming the most famous player in the CFL. Eventually he was able to make his way back to the NFL, but times have changed. A trip to Canada for any of the three QBs would effectively spell the end of their NFL career. Tim Tebow opted for baseball over the CFL.

That’s why none of these quarterbacks will end up in the CFL. It’s just fun that one team holds all the cards if they decided to take their talents to Canada.
