Through the Day

One of the beautiful things about going on vacation is that you typically have the opportunity to design your day. If you’re craving adventure, you can seek out an activity that elevates your heart rate, stirs your adrenaline and fuels your desire for excitement! If everyday life has become heavy and vacation is your opportunity to disconnect and recenter, you can seek out relaxation.

Sometimes, though, the desire to make the most of every single moment can take over. There’s nothing wrong with a jam-packed itinerary if that excites and fuels you. But it’s helpful to be mindful of how you transition from one thing to the next to ensure you actually are making the most of each experience and that you set yourself up to feel fulfilled and at peace at the end of the day.

Imagine it’s a sunny day at Blackberry Mountain. You’ve had breakfast to energize your physical self and wake up your mind, and you’re ready to get out and explore. If you thrive on adventure, there’s really no better option than testing your challenge course skills on Arbor Adventure. There’s height, balance and maneuvering challenges that will engage your muscles and delight your sense of thrill-seeking.

But, if you come down from the canopy to head to a Forest Bathing Yoga session immediately after, you want to take a moment and reset for the change of pace. Stay present in the joy that you experienced in adventure, but set aside a moment to take a few deep, mindful breaths. Notice your heart rate, notice your internal monologue, and lay the ground work for calming down. The meditation will natural calm you, of course, but if you take a moment to set your intention for your next experience, you’ll be even more in tune to absorb the time of relaxation.

This concept works in the other direction as well. If you start with a quiet morning, you may want to send energy into your body as you head into a workout or adventure. The relaxation and clarity of a slow morning is great for your mind! As you settle back into your physical self, moving and stretching after your practice, meditation or journaling, align your intention with where you’re heading next.

A quick check in throughout your day, in those moments where it’s time for your energy or focus to adjust, will support you making the most of every experience as well as stay present so you’re fully enjoying your day.
