The SPSP Convention Committee is pleased to announce that submissions for the 25th Annual Convention in Denver are now open. As we prepare for this event, we would like to share some important updates regarding the event format, policies, and submission guidelines. Our goal is to address these changes transparently while reaffirming our commitment to serving the needs of our diverse membership.

Virtual Convention Experience

After convening a Convention Task Force last year to evaluate the virtual convention model, we have decided to restructure the virtual convention program. The Task Force carefully reviewed viewing data and feedback from past conventions, the member census, and good practices from similar scholarly associations to develop this new model. Responses indicated that the in-person experience is the most valued and widely used format. While onsite events will serve as the primary way to participate in the convention going forward, we recognize the value that virtual programming offers for those who are unable to join us in person. To that end, we will be offering online highlights that will include a limited number of recordings from various talks presented throughout the convention (e.g., featured sessions, symposia, a data blitz session). These highlights will be available to all SPSP members, regardless of whether they have registered to attend the convention.

We are also exploring new opportunities for virtual engagement throughout the year, and your feedback will be crucial in ensuring that any virtual programs we offer will support you and your work. Meanwhile, SPSP will continue to build on a robust collection of existing opportunities for virtual education and connection—including Learning OnlineFree-Form Fridays, and our new member engagement platform SPSP Community.

Now, those listings are available for a limited time on the Convention Collaboration Zone. Please note that listings will be searchable until July 11, 2024 11:59 PM PT.

DEIA Statements

To advance and increase Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism (DEIA) in personality and social psychology, SPSP introduced a DEIA statement in 2022 for submissions. After a three-year pilot period, the Convention Committee, based on suggestions from the Diversity and Climate Committee and feedback received in post-convention surveys, decided to revise this procedure.

During the submissions process, submitters will indicate via checkboxes whether their work is of DEIA interest. This procedure is aimed at encouraging researchers to reflect on how their work embodies DEIA and how they can further incorporate these values in future research. This procedure is also aimed at monitoring if and how DEIA is promoted within SPSP members’ research and how to further improve it in research practice. More information about this process is available here.

Peer Review Process

In our ongoing efforts to promote high-quality, scientifically rigorous research at our Annual Convention, we are creating. Submission reviewers will now be asked to flag any concerning content for further review by the decision-making team. Additionally, the Science Program Review Co-Chairs will prioritize strength & rigor scores when making decisions.

Once podium abstracts are closed, the review process begins. Podium presentations are assigned three reviewers from the SPSP Review Board. Poster and Roundtable abstracts will be assigned two reviewers from the Review Board once the second abstract deadline closes in the Fall. Acceptances for podium presentations will be sent in late September and acceptances for posters and roundtable unconferences will be sent in late October.

Presentation Policies

To maintain the integrity of the conference program, we are reaffirming that the presentation areas at our Annual Convention are dedicated to presenting the scientific research accepted for the conference. We expect all presentations to use inclusive language that avoids stereotypes, labeling, and pejorative comments. We ask that participants display the highest standard of courteous and respectful behavior, especially when addressing sensitive and controversial topics.

Our goal is to create an environment that fosters the open, rigorous, and respectful exchange of ideas that is central to the mission of SPSP. As we navigate these changes, we remain committed to continuous improvement and collaboration with our members. Your input and perspectives are invaluable in shaping an Annual Convention that serves the needs of our diverse community. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and support as we work to ensure a productive and inclusive event for all.

Sincerely,
The SPSP Convention Committee
