The peripheral sympathetic nervous system: Its role in normal and pathologic anxiety

Acute stress induces sympathetic activation. This response is more efficient in normals than
in anxious persons. In chronic anxiety disorder the level and pattern of the sympathetic
activity depends on the severity of anxiety and the type of anxiety disorder. Each anxiety
disorder has not only distinct subjective symptoms, but also distinct physiologic response
patterns.
