With the presentation of tree-ring dates for nearly 150 buildings in Vernacular Architecture,
starting in 1976, I hope it will seem worthwhile to follow up a suggestion made by the

With the presentation of tree-ring dates for nearly 150 buildings in Vernacular Architecture, starting in 1976, I hope it will seem worthwhile to follow up a suggestion made by the Director of the CBA and provide an index to them. We would also acknowledge our appreciation of the regular support from the CBA, both for the lists themselves and for this index. The page references in the index are in the form already used in our indexes, with 11.22 (for example) referring to page 22 of volume 11. Two published dates that do not relate to buildings (or building timbers) have been excluded (13.48; 17.53). Felling dates obtained are in brackets, with their precision indicated as follows:
+ 0= exactly dated to this year (complete sapwood).+ n= author's estimated error is plus or minus n (normally with some sapwood present); when a felling date range is quoted the index gives its mid-point.
+= felling after the date given (ie no sapwood). The authors' own sapwood estimates are used. Approximate grid references have been provided where they were omitted from the original lists. The counties are taken directly from the original lists, and refer inconsistently to the pre-and post-1974 situation.
