Haemochorial placentation in the human is characteristically associated with extensive
decidualization of the endometrial stroma and deep penetration by trophoblast of the
endometrium and inner third of the myometrium. The spiral arteries in this area, known as
the placental bed, after being breached by nonvillous trophoblast undergo extensive
adaptations and structural alterations in order to provide the intervillous space of the
growing placenta with an adequate volume of maternal blood.
