Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common infection in infancy, with nearly all children
affected by two years of age. Approximately 0.5% to 2.0% of all children are hospitalized
with lower respiratory tract disease, of which 50% to 90% have bronchiolitis and 5% to 40%
have pneumonia. Morbidity and mortality are highest in children with nosocomial infection
and in those with underlying medical illnesses such as cardiac and chronic lung disease.

Epidemiology and prevention of respiratory syncytial virus infections among infants and young children

GF Langley, LJ Anderson- The Pediatric infectious disease…, 2011 - journals.lww.com
Since its discovery in 1956, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been recognized as one of
the most common causes of serious lower respiratory tract infections in young children
worldwide. While considered a high priority, development of a safe and effective vaccine has
remained elusive. Prevention of RSV disease relies on infection control and hygiene
measures, as well as providing immunoprophylaxis in select infants. The prophylaxis,
however, is costly, and so targeting the recipient population and timing of administration is…
