Alessandro Nivola films Mark Madoff suicide for HBO movie

Actor Alessandro Nivola was overheard at a VIP East Hampton dinner for Oscar-buzzed drama “Spotlight” saying he’d just arrived from shooting a dramatic scene himself in a different project.

Nivola’s been filming HBO’s “The Wizard of Lies” about Bernie Madoff and starring Robert De Niro in the lead. He plays Mark Madoff, the Ponzi schemer’s son who hanged himself in 2010 on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest.

“Alessandro was telling friends he’d just finished the scene in which he kills himself,” said an insider.

Mark’s body was discovered by his wife’s stepfather, a prominent New York lawyer.

After “Spotlight” received a standing ovation at the Hamptons International Film Festival, producer Steve Golin hosted a party at the Maidstone, attended by Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts, John Slattery, Alec Baldwin and director Tom McCarthy.

“Spotlight” follows the true story of the Boston Globe’s exposé of a massive child molestation scandal. We hear screenings are being set up for Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
