Madonna adopted son David Banda from Malawi in 2007. In 2009 she returned, adopting daughter Mercy James. Of course, being Madonna, even that was met with controversy, with Mercy’s grandfather telling The Daily Mail, “Nobody has told me a thing about Mercy being in the country or about her welfare since she left us. She has my blood flowing in her veins. It is preposterous that I am not made aware of anything regarding her development … [Madonna] has shown no humanity at all towards us.” Barcroft Media

Mary-Louise Parker adopted daughter Ash in 2007. She told People, “I finally just decided, ‘OK, I’m going to do this, and it’s going to be really hard because I’m single, and I’m going to do it anyway.'” She added that adopting from Ethiopia was a big decision for her — and a proud one. “It had never occurred to me before, but … I wanted to go somewhere where there was a need. Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness adopted son Oscar and daughter Ava when Furness miscarried. However, that wasn't the sole reason for their family expansion. In 2013 she opened up about the experience to Ladies Home Journal (via Us Weekly). “I didn’t think I’d have a baby on my own,” Britton said. “But there’s a lot that comes out of having a plan and then seeing that there’s another way you can go. If you hold hard and fast to the plan regardless of where you’re at, then you go against the flow of your life. Charity Care International introduced Emma Thompson to her adopted son, Tindyebwa Agaba, when he was 16. The Daily Mail reports that before meeting Thompson at a Refugee Council party in 2003, Agaba faced a traumatic life: His father died of AIDS and his mother and sister went missing following the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Agaba graduated from college with honors in 2009, explaining in his commencement speech, “I found my first year very difficult, the second year was less difficult and the third year was an absolute blast. Michelle Pfeiffer opened up to Good Housekeeping (via People) that she met her husband, David E. Kelley, when she was adopting daughter Claudia Rose — and that it actually solidified their relationship. “The adoption process was already in motion when he and I met,” Pfeiffer said. “So when she came, he and I had only been together for about two months. So we had this child with us right away, and most people don’t have that. But I really got to see him in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men.
