Falintil guerillas challenge peacekeepers

The head of the international peacekeeping force in East Timor, Major-General Peter Cosgrove, has complained that the East Timorese independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, violated an understanding with the peacekeeping force when twenty armed pro-independence guerillas accompanied him to a UN meeting..

The pro-independence guerillas of Falintil have agreed to carry arms only within designated areas.

General Cosgrove said the incident was a matter of considerable regret; but emergency discussions with Mr Gusmao have settled their differences. In a separate development, the outgoing chief of the United Nations mission in East Timor, Ian Martin, has said that Indonesian army officers responsible for widespread violence following East Timor's independence referendum must be brought to justice.
