Malaysian candidates named

Both government and opposition in Malaysia have been naming their candidates for the general election in ten days time.

The government coalition says almost a-third of its candidates will be newcomers, although it has confirmed that the controversial finance minister, Daim Zainuddin, will stand for re-election despite recent comments that he would like to leave politics.

Mr Daim was a central figure in the political drama last year over the sacking of the then deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, and his later charging on sex and corruption offences.

The opposition alliance says Mr Anwar will stand again -- if permitted by election officials -- but elsewhere it says it has agreed one joint candidate to fight each peninsula constituency. The alliance includes Mr Anwar's supporters, the Islamic Party of Malaysia PAS and the mainly non-Moslem Democratic Action Party.
